Bush: Come Clean About Snowmobiles in Yellowstone

Snowmobiles cause air and noise pollution, disrupt wildlife, and make park rangers sick from exhaust. Under President Clinton, the National Park Service (NPS) banned the use of snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park due to their impact on the environment and human health. This decision was based on over a decade of scientific study, and hundreds of thousands of public comments received in support of the ban.

So why is the Bush administration actively seeking to reopen Yellowstone to snowmobiles? The administration not only overturned the original ban on these vehicles in Yellowstone, but also appealed a court ruling that reinstated the ban. The federal judge in that case called the administration's policy "completely politically driven" at the expense of sound science.

And now, an internal report prepared by Yellowstone staff shows that four-stroke snowmobiles emit enough noise to cause hearing damage. The Bush administration is championing four-stroke snowmobiles in its ongoing attempt to reverse the snowmobile ban.

The Bush administration needs to be honest with the public about conditions in America's national parks. We call on President Bush and Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton to release to the public all information on the health and environmental impacts of snowmobiles, and to uphold the original ban on these vehicles in Yellowstone National Park.

9,507 8:47 am PDT, May 10   Jonathan Schneider Michigan United States What a great way to help further trash the environment, put the nation deeper in debt to foreign oil "providers", exhaust the resources that might be crucial to Jenna's and Barbs generation and to shout to the rest of the world that Americans must and always will "live large" and "go for the gusto". Let's insist that if WE are not free to travel ,ever faster and ever louder and ever more frivolously, over land and water, through and even above the air (as space tourists, dont you know!), WE are NOT free! Let's remember that untold numbers of American patriots fought and died for these rights which the treehuggers so want to take away from the treebuggerers!

Bush: Come Clean About Snowmobiles in Yellowstone

Dear President Bush and Secretary Norton:

I am writing to urge you to be honest with the American public about the health and environmental impacts of snowmobile use in National Parks, and to uphold the original ban on snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park.

I am concerned about a recent internal report prepared by Yellowstone staff that shows that four-stroke snowmobiles emit enough noise to cause hearing damage. This new evidence of snowmobile’s negative impacts on human health, combined with the decades of scientific studies that led to the original ban on snowmobiles under President Clinton, should be more than enough proof that this ban is in the best interest of park employees, visitors, and wildlife.

Please release to the public all information on the health and environmental impacts of snowmobiles, and uphold the original ban on snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park.

Thank you,
