Tell the Canadian Government: Protect the Porcupine Caribou Herd!

  • by: Wildcanada.net
  • recipient: Paul Martin, Prime Minister of Canada;
This fall, two Canadians walked and skiied for five months beside the animals of the 123,000-member Porcupine Caribou Herd. They travelled with the international herd on its annual migration through the Yukon to its calving grounds in the Alaska Wildlife Refuge, and back to the Yukon. They experienced the life of the caribou for more than 1,000 miles - through extreme temperatures and arctic storms, past wolf packs, grizzly bears and voracious insects, and across dozens of frozen and open arctic rivers. They learned how important the special qualities and sanctuary of the calving grounds are to the survival of this magnificent herd. They learned more is at stake in the Arctic Refuge than anyone had imagined and that once gone, no amount of money could buy it back.

The Arctic Refuge is off the Energy Bill, for now. But in two years or less it will be back in the sights of politicians and oil and gas executives. Sign the petition below to let your elected representatives know you want them to take this window of opportunity to press for permanent protection of the Refuge.

Did you know that:
  • 95% of Alaska's Arctic Coast is already open to oil and gas development - the Arctic Refuge is the last 5%.
  • According to US Geological Survey estimates, the economically recoverable oil that is available in the area will feed the total US demand for only 6 months.
  • According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, increasing the fuel efficiency of new vehicles by just 3mpg would save 5 times the amount of oil that the Arctic Refuge is likely to yield.
  • Send your petition today to urge your politicians to help permanently protect the Arctic Refuge, the international Porcupine Caribou Herd and the First Nations people on both sides of the border who still depend on them.
    The Right Honourable Jean Chretien
    Prime Minister of Canada

    The Honourable Paul Martin
    Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada

    I am very concerned about the serious threat posed by oil development to the calving grounds of the transboundary Porcupine Caribou Herd in the Arctic Refuge.

    I have followed the trek of two Canadians who accompanied the migration of the herd from Old Crow, Yukon to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and back to their Yukon wintering grounds this year. Their trek has brought home to the world how critical these coastal plains are to the caribou for raising their young and ensuring the survival of the herd. Their experience in the calving grounds and the extreme sensitivity of the caribou to their presence leave me with no doubt that oil and gas exploration or development could not occur without causing detrimental disturbance to the herd.

    I urge you to do everything in your power to pressure the United States government to permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge.

    Sincerely,

    Your Name

    cc: Honourable Sheila Tooze, Environment and Fisheries Officer, Canadian Embassy, Washington DC, USA
