Tell Restaurants and Markets: Donate, Don't Dump, Usable Excess Food

  • by: Care2.com

Every year, restaurants, supermarkets, other food service establishments and individual households dump an average of 14 billion pounds of food waste.

Meanwhile, 30 million Americans are at risk for hunger.

What most don't know is that supermarkets and restaurants can donate to food shelters and reduce hunger in America without risk of legal liability. As long as their donation is in good faith, they can make a generous donation instead of putting good food to waste.

Our parents always told us not to waste our food, that children in other countries aren't as lucky enough to eat like we do. But the fact is, children in America aren't always so lucky either, and by throwing out usable, excess food, we perpetuate hunger and add to environmental destruction.

Tell the Food Industry Association Executives to strongly encourage all food retailers and services to donate, not dump, surplus food. Rather than sitting in a landfill, this food can help people, the environment, and, thanks to tax write-offs for their donations, the companies themselves.
Dear Food Industry Association Executives,

Every year, restaurants, supermarkets, other food service establishments, and individual households dump an average of 14 billion pounds of food waste.

Meanwhile, 30 million Americans are at risk for hunger.

Supermarkets and restaurants can donate to food shelters and reduce hunger in America, as well as spare the additions to our nation's landfills, without risk of legal liability. As long as their donation is in good faith, they can make a generous donation instead of putting good food to waste.

Our parents always told us not to waste our food, that children in other countries aren't as lucky enough to eat like we do. But the fact is, children in America aren't always so lucky either, and by throwing out usable, excess food, we perpetuate hunger in our own country and add to environmental destruction.

Strongly encourage all food retailers to donate, not dump, surplus food. Rather than sitting in a landfill, this food can help people, the environment, and, thanks to tax write-offs for their donations, the companies themselves.
