Philippines: Give Legal Protection to LGBT People And Pass the Anti Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity Discrimination Act

  • by: Amelia Meister
  • recipient: The Philippines House Of Representatives

A ground-breaking new law, the Anti Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Discrimination Act (SOGI), is being proposed in the Philippines House of Representatives that would see LGBT have human rights protections. As a member of the LGBT community, I would love to see my Filippino siblings have the some of the same rights and protections that I have in Canada.

The law would ensure that LGBT people could not be refused employment or education based on their gender or sexual orientation and would also sensitize law enforcement to LGBT issues.

The time is ripe in the Philippines for this law to pass, especially with its support from the first ever transgender person to be elected into the House of Representatives, Geraldine Roman. Roman has been a tireless supporter of this law and is giving it new momentum in the House.

To the Philippines House of Representatives,

As a strong supporter of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) rights across the globe I urge you to pass the law that is currently being considered in the House. The Anti Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Discrimination Act is a critical law that would offer more human rights to people who identify in the LGBT spectrum.

All people deserve to not be discriminated against. This law would bring a better quality of life to thousands of people across the country and would put the Philippines on the map as a leader in Asia for LGBT rights.
