Tell David Cameron and EU leaders: We must support refugees seeking safety and a better life

The first months of 2016 have shown us that Europe is continuing to experience an upsurge in refugees arriving on our shores. More than 140,000 people have arrived by sea from Turkey to Greece already this year.

91% of those are from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Of those fleeing Syria, more than half are children. These are families who have embarked on the world's deadliest migration route and are risking everything as they seek refuge. Closing borders will not stop them finding another route to safety.

For many politicians, it seems that the response to the refugee dilemma is to build higher walls, bolt the doors and pull down the blinds, but this undermines the EU's commitment to human rights.

To defend and affirm our common humanity, we must make sure our politicians hear and respond to the groundswell of public support in favour of offering sanctuary to more refugees.

Sign now to tell David Cameron and other European leaders that the EU's response must prioritise the rights of refugees, respect international and European law, and that the UK should accept more refugees as part of a global resettlement plan.
Dear Prime Minister,

More people are being forced from their homes by violence and repression than any time since the Second World War, and the scale of mass-migration today is testing Europe's common humanity.

I call on you to prioritise the rights of refugees and respect international law. Please have the courage to govern with foresight, not with fear.

Our commitment to human rights must be unwavering.

I am glad the UK is committed to accepting 20,000 refugees by 2020 and commend the scale of the UK’s aid to the region, but it is not enough. I am happy to have more refugees in my community and ask you to work with other world leaders to agree a global comprehensive resettlement plan.
