Gay Marriage for Maine

Please, help us get marriage for Maine!

As you may know, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA),which was passed by Bill Clinton, allows states to accept or deny marriage rights to same-sex couples.  Same-sex marriage is an extremely important issue. By banning same-sex marriage we would be writing hate and discrimination into our constitution and we would be harming so many innocent people. Without the right of marriage, homosexual couples are denied 1,138 federal rights such as the right to make medical decisions for their spouse, family leave, the right to pettition for same-sex partners to immigrate, the right to adopt, the right to share jointly held property after break-up, certain social security benefits, tax benefits, disability benefits, inheritance rights, hospital visitation rights, and so much more. Our constitution states  that "All men are created equal" but by banning rights from a certain group of people we are downgrading them and  forcing them to become second class citizens. This must be stopped. America needs to move it's civil rights forward, what we need right now is not discrimination. Same-sex couples pay the same taxes as heterosexual couples but don't get the same benefits? Is this fair?  Same-sex couples are no different from anyone esle.  There is no good reason not to allow gay people to marry. Do you Remember learning about the Civil rights movement? Do you remeber learning that  court ruled that seperate is not equal? I believe that the same principles apply here.

For More information please scroll down to the bottom of the pettition, in which I have links.
