Support a Thriving Outdoor Recreation Economy in Moab

Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors tour Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, bike the Slickrock Trail, or raft the Green River. By attracting millions of tourism dollars, public lands sustain businesses, create jobs, and pump money into Moab's local economy.

Tourism and recreation create lasting revenue and opportunity in Moab. Many industries are subject to busts and booms, but Grand County's tourism and recreation economy held strong during the last recession. That is because the tourism and recreation industry creates permanent American jobs -- jobs that can't be eliminated or outsourced in an instant.

Public lands benefit us all. We can support responsible energy development without tipping the balance in favor of drilling that could jeopardize the outdoor economy. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and the surrounding public lands are the backbone of the Moab area's economy, so we can't afford to risk our public lands and the health of our parks.

Speak out for these special places! As the federal Bureau of Land Management develops a master leasing plan for the Moab area, the message you send today will help ensure a balance between responsible oil and gas development and the protection of our parks and great outdoors.
Director Kornze and Filed Manager Ransel,

I'm writing to express my support for the Bureau of Land Management taking an approach to oil and gas development in the Moab area that recognizes the vital role that our public lands play in fueling Moab's thriving outdoor recreation economy. Please ensure the final Moab Master Leasing Plan (MLP) is strong and fully protects recreation resources.

Moab's economy has remained strong because of the area's great natural assets: Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and world-class biking, rafting, and rock-climbing. The tourism and recreation industry creates permanent, American jobs — jobs that can't be eliminated or outsourced in an instant.

The draft master leasing plan for Moab is on the right track, and the bureau can make it a clear win for outdoor recreation and our public lands with a few important changes, including:

* stronger limits on surface impacts near hiking, climbing, and canyoneering locations, as well as rivers, streams, and drinking water resources; and

* increased protections for the following popular recreation areas: Upper Ten Mile, Labyrinth Canyon, Red Wash, and Hatch Point.

A master leasing plan that ensures a real balance between responsible oil and gas development and the protection of outdoor treasures is critical for Moab's tourism-based economy and recreation opportunities on our public lands.

Sincerely,
