Guarantee Americans Paid Time Off

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
American workers receive the least vacation time of any wealthy industrial nation in the world. In fact, in 2008, only 14 percent of Americans will get a vacation of two weeks or longer. And even when people have vacation, they are often afraid they will be punished for taking it.

By law, Australians have four weeks off, Europeans four to five weeks, Japanese two - while we have ZERO! Our health and our happiness suffer as a result - vacations have been found to reduce the risk of heart attack in men by 30 percent and in women by 50 percent. And, as evidenced by the recent economic collapse and the falling dollar, slaving away at work isn't bolstering America's economy - virtually all countries with strong currencies in Europe give people the right to more than two weeks of paid vacation.

When Congress returns to session in 2009, they should put forth legislation to guarantee that every full-time American worker receives a minimum of three weeks paid vacation every year. Urge your Congressperson to support guaranteed paid time off for all Americans!

Dear Member of Congress,

We need to encourage a culture of health and rest by promising Americans that they can take the time off they deserve in order to protect their mental and physical health. Please guarantee that every full-time American worker receives minimum of three weeks paid vacation every year.

Sincerely,

I feel this would help cut health care and insurance costs to both employee and employer, help strengthen families and communities, and overall be a boost to the economy! Employers may not like it at first, but I think they will find employees will be happier and healthier and therefore more productive as well!

In these troubling financial times it is imperative that workers have paid time to care for theirselves or family members. One days pay can make the difference between paying bills or not. wae also need to have time off for rest and recuperation from stress and to build stronger family ties. Ultimately workers will be more productive if they have adequate time to take for rest and relaxation to preserve or improve their mental and physical health

I FULLY support this! It is really sad that after slaving away for a year, two years, ten years, you MIGHT be lucky enough to get ONE WEEK OFF. Some places don't even offer that so if you need time off, you have to take it without pay. Many people use their vacation time to take care of personal things they can't get to when they're stuck working 40, 50, 100 hours a week, and can't get away to do so - doctor's appointments, surgeries, important things. And most surgeries require you to be off work for a MINIMUM of six weeks. Which, yes, that would be covered as an UNPAID leave as opposed to not having to worry about how you're going to pay your bills and EAT for the weeks following your surgery, but it is only right that every working American get at LEAST THREE WEEKS (I think it should increase with each year of employment) off EVERY YEAR!! It would make workers more productive, and dare I say, they might actually LIKE coming to work every day. I realize the society we have created is that of "worker bees" to where if you're not working 1,000 a week you're lazy, but our society is partially what is making people more aggressive and producing more incidents of violence - especially in the workplace. While it's not acceptable by any stretch of the imagination, it's certainly understandable. Between people being forced to do the work of five people and expected to do so without overtime, or if they ARE afforded overtime, the time spent away from their loved ones can really take a toll on a person. Let's start looking at the benefits to society as whole of course, but let's especially consider the MENTAL HEALTH of each and every American. If we know we are guaranteed time off each year, we will work harder, and perhaps maybe be more productive in our jobs.
