Iranian blogger and actress Pegah Ahangarani vanished in Tehran after attempting to travel to Germany to cover the FIFA Women's World Cup soccer tournament. Within days, those close to her found out that she had been arrested and is reportedly being held in solitary confinement.
The Iranian government has been in conflict over the FIFA's restrictions on the use of headscarves, which women by law must wear. Pegah's friends believe that the ruling regime saw her decision to cover the event as an anti-government action.
Journalists and bloggers should be able to cover any issue that they like without living in fear of the consequences. Pegah Ahangarani deserves to cover the women's World Cup and should be free to blog her opinion. Demand Pegah's immediate release!
Pegah Ahangarani is an actress, documentary film maker and blogger who was recently imprisoned after attempting to travel to Germany to cover the women's World Cup soccer tournament. There are concerns that she is being held in solitary confinement without access to her family or lawyer.
Journalists and bloggers like Pegah deserve the right to report on any issue that they see fit and should not live in fear of expressing their opinions.
I urge you to immediately release Pegah Ahangarani. Until her release she must be treated humanely and be allowed regular access to a lawyer and to her family.
