Tell Scott Pruitt: Leave California's Clean Air Policies Alone

According to new reports by the Washington Post and the New York Times, leaked information shows that the Trump administration is working to reverse the highly successful clean cars program—which cuts billions of tons of pollution and saves consumers like you money at the gas pump. And EPA's new Administrator, Scott Pruitt, intends to also attack California's long-standing authorization to set its own more protective standards for clean air.

This is a clear cut attack on states' rights, illuminating Pruitt's refusal to believe in the right of California to protect its own citizens from tailpipe pollution—and the hypocrisy of this policy is astounding. Right after he was confirmed, Pruitt declared that he would achieve cleaner air through "cooperation between the States and the EPA." And just weeks later, he's already gone back on his word.

Take action today, and tell Administrator Pruitt not to strip California of its rights to safeguard the air you breathe.

Don't target California's right to cleaner cars

Dear Administrator Pruitt,

According to recent reports, under your watch the Environmental Protection Agency is working to weaken California's long-standing authorization to set its own protective standards for tailpipe pollution. As a Californian, I am strongly opposed to this attack on our state's rights.

The idea that California could set stricter standards is established in the Clean Air Act itself, which recognized that the state has especially tough air quality challenges and that cars inflict a heavy burden on the health of Californians. California's leadership, forged in law, has been widely respected over decades by Republican and Democratic EPA administrators, all while protecting Californians from the uniquely critical impacts we face from climate change.

This is a policy that protects California's children from asthma attacks, keeps smog out of our air, and lowers the amount of oil we waste, all while protecting us from dangerous climate pollution.

After your confirmation, you stated that you would achieve cleaner air through "cooperation between the States and EPA." Please stay true to that promise, and keep California's right to cleaner car standards intact.
