Education provides children and families with a pathway out of poverty and the tools they need to overcome incredible obstacles.
This is the common thread in ONE and the Global Campaign for Education's The Big Read book, a volume of stories intended to foster literacy and inspire action on behalf of the 75 million children who are currently not in school.
The stories in The Big Read describe personal and often heart-wrenching struggles to attain education for themselves, their students and their loved ones. These inspiring stories reveal our irrepressible hope and our determination to help others achieve a basic, free and good quality education.
ONE and GCE will present this book to President Obama in June with a request that he ensure a pathway out of poverty for every child. We want that request to be as strong as it can be, so we're asking you to add your name to The Big Read. Do so by signing the petition today!
We took action on “Education is the Pathway Out of Global Poverty”!

If we can bail out big business, we can surely set aside enough money to educate all our people.

For many of us education is taken for granted. We grow up with the expectation that we will, and have to, attend educational facilities from a very young age. However for many people across the world this is not a reality. They don't have the same expectation as many of us do and there basic day to day neccessity is to survive. It greatly surprises me that this is not been at the forefront of the agendas of countries (wealthy countries) who have the ability to implement change. I look at my son and cannot even begin to fathom the idea of him working in slave labour or of having no chance of a prosperous future simply because education is not afforded to him. When we see the positive outcomes of education in societies like this it seems unthinkable not do all we can to improve their lives through education.

Someone once said that, "The Postulate of Freedom is so strong that it cannot be defeated. However, there is one way that we can all lose; if that postulate is educated out of us."
Education must start with a very basic understanding of the fundamentals of our language. If we know the words for certain, we understand the concepts. Please bring dictionaries back into the classrooms.
