On April 10, 2007, a baby orca whale about two weeks of age beached itself along Mexico's Pacific Coast. She was caught in a fishing net, bleeding from bad cuts on the skin caused by glass & on the verge of dying, the newborn named "Pascuala" (Pas-ku-A-la) was transported to Dolphin Adventure Aquarium in Nuevo Vallarta, where caretakers called SeaWorld for advice. She is now just over a month old, weighs more then 400lbs & her skin is healing but she still has a ways to go. Currently she is in a tank too small & far to warm for her to gain more weight. A transfer to SeaWorld California for better care, colder water & being with other orcas was blocked by the Mexican Government because of laws to stop the trafficking of marine mammals to US parks. However Pascuala's case is very different as she was a rescue, caretakers want to see Pascuala sent to SeaWorld because there is no tank in Mexico big enough & she will die if put back in the ocean or in a tank to small when she grows. Pascuala has become the center of an international controversy over whether she should stay in Mexico or be sent to a US marine park.A little more information on Pascuala & her situation....
Pascuala is an orca aka killer whale, the top predator in the ocean. She comes from a family of orcas known as Transients. Transient orca's unlike the fish eating Resident orcas that are well known, prey on large marine mammals such as sharks, baleen whales, sea lions, dolphins & porpoises. Mexico's government suggest releasing Pascuala, but this would be a death sentence.
Pascuala has been being hand-fed & getting all her contact from humans. This is what she has come to know because from 2 weeks of age she has been being cared for around the clock by dozens of volunteers & the Dolphin Adventure staff to try to bring her back to health. She is in the main show pool with the company of bottlenose dolphins, but the water is to warm & the tank to small. If she continues to get better she will quickly outgrow the small tank she is currently being kept in. Dolphin Adventure staff are doing the best they can & are in contact with SeaWorld, but they have no prior experience with a killer whale.I, Orcaholic2001 (admin of the Orca Adventure Forum) have created this petition with the help & suggestion of one of Pascuala's caretakers. Many people have spent many hours, nights & days with Pascuala & are the reason she is still with us today. Some who play a big part in Pascuala's care are Ricardo & the vet Paola, biology students from ITMAR, volunteers from Conexión con la Vida Silvestre and Grupo Ecologistas de Nayarit & of course all the crew from the Dolphin Adventure park. Big Thank You to all those who are caring for Pascuala.
The Dolphin Adventure park has set up a blog where visitors can read about Pascuala's progress, view videos & photos, detailed information about her meals, swimming lessons & care. That blog can be found at: http://orcapascuala.blogspot.com The blog is in Spanish & a website translator can be found here for those who don't speak Spanish: http://babelfish.altavista.com/

Annoucement: I'm sorry to bring you the news but Pascuala has passed away of respirtory infection on June 10, 2007. We are allowing the petition to reach its goal for her & we will still send it in. Thank you for showing support for Pascuala, if only she was able to be with us longer.

The orcas will become extinct if we can not nurse them back to health. I think that this orca or any animal should be able to go to anoher country for better living conditions or emergency care. Let Prescula come to America to be able to live her life like a normal orca. |

Act Now to Help Pascuala the baby orca
Dear President Felipe Calderon,
Everyone that has signed the petition here hopes that you will see how many people out there really care about Pascuala & her future. There are so many people who want the best for her which would be to be sent to a much larger facility such as SeaWorld of California, with excellent care from vets & researchers that have extension experience in the care of killer whales aka orcas, colder water & other orcas to learn how to be an orca.
Pascuala comes from a family of Transient killer whales, not much is known about them & trying to find her family would be extremely difficult if not impossible. She stranded to young to even have learned to vocalize & to be an orca. Trying to rehabilitate an orca that would have to learn how to hunt for large prey such as baleen whales, sharks, sea lions & even dolphins is unrealistic. Pascuala is currently trying to play with bottlenose dolphins that would be part of her food intake if she never stranded. Please do not consider a release, doing so would cause Pascuala a slow death of suffering & starvation.
We understand the concern of the Mexican government not wanting any marine mammals to be trafficked to US marine parks but Pascuala's case is far different as she beached in such bad condition, she was bleeding & near death. She was rescued & was not forced to strand to be exported to a US park. It is well known that this was not a force stranding or an attempt at trafficking. Its unfair to say she is "Mexico's wildlife" just because she happened to beach in Mexico, unless there is research that shows her family group never leaves Mexico's waters. She could have come from anywhere as orcas are found in all the worlds oceans.
Saving Pascuala's life should take precedence over politics. Please do the right thing for this baby orca & allow her transfer to SeaWorld of California where she can become healthier & learn to be an orca. Being caught in a fishing net, cut up by glass & losing her mother is the fault of careless humans, its only right that we give back to her by allowing her to survive in a facility where she can live out her life.
Signed the Many people who show their support of this decision!
