Protect the Amazon's Madeira River!

The Brazilian government is planning to build two massive dams on one of the Amazon's most important tributaries: the Madeira River.

The projects would threaten the river's unique biodiversity, destroying habitat for the spotted jaguar, giant otter, pink dolphin and countless other mammal species, and would affect the land and livelihoods of thousands of river bank dwellers and indigenous people.

We need your help today to stop these destructive projects. On December 10, the government plans to auction off the first project to the highest bidder.

Damming the Madeira would devastate the biological and cultural diversity found along this critical lifeline of the Amazon. Tell the Brazilian President to save the Madeira and other rivers of the Amazon now!

Dear President:

I urge you to reconsider plans to dam the Madeira River in the Amazon.

The rivers of the Amazon provide habitat for countless endangered species. They provide food, transportation and drinking water to the region's populations. These rivers are essential to life in more than half of the planet's remaining tropical rainforests.

Mega-hydroelectric dams on the Madeira River would have a devastating effect on the biological and cultural diversity found along this critical lifeline of the Amazon. The projects would destroy habitat for the spotted jaguar, giant otter, pink dolphin, and a range of other species, and would affect the land and livelihoods of tens of thousands of families of riverbank dwellers and indigenous peoples.

The Madeira is too important a treasure to destroy. Please take decisive action to save the Madeira and suspend the auction for the Santo Antonio Dam on December 10. There are less destructive energy options for Brazil, including energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
