Demand Better Care for Breast Cancer Patients

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Care2

More than 180,000 women in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. But is our health care system providing the help that these women need? Many women are forced to leave the hospital just hours after undergoing a major surgery for breast cancer due to pressure from insurance companies.

The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act (BCPPA) prevents this from happening by guaranteeing women the right to a minimum hospital stay of 48 hours after a mastectomy or lumpectomy and 24 hours after a lymph node removal. The BCPPA ensures that patients and doctors decide the duration of a hospital visit, not insurance companies. It also demands coverage for breast cancer patients seeking second opinions.

This bill made it through the House but ran out of time before the Senate adjourned. If the Senate returns for a November lame-duck session, the BCPPA should be on its agenda! Tell your senator you want to see this bill passed in the lame-duck session. Help breast cancer patients get the care and support they need!

Dear Senator,

More than 180,000 women in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. I am concerned that they are not receiving the care they need--especially when they are forced to leave the hospital just hours after undergoing a major surgery for breast cancer.

That is why I support the Breast Cancer Patient Protection (BCPPA) Act, which prevents insurance companies from pressuring hospitals to release patients before they are fully recovered. It guarantees a woman's right to a minimum hospital stay of 48 hours after a mastectomy or lumpectomy and 24 hours after a lymph node removal. The bill also guarantees insurance coverage for patients seeking second opinions.

[Your comments]

This bill has the potential to be a tremendous help for patients suffering from breast cancer. If you meet again for a lame-duck session in November, I urge you to bring this bill to a vote on the Senate floor and offer your support for it.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

I am 65 and 30 years later I once again was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have first hand experience that the level of care has greatly diminished. I have endured painful in-office medical procedures that 30 years ago would have been done in the hospital. Shame on the health insurance providers, medical professionals for their complicity and lawmakers for their disregard of compassionate patient care.

It is inhumane to release a woman who has undergone this radical surgery in less than 48 hours for a mastectomy or 24 hours for a lumpectomy. Even this minimal amount of time is inhumane. These women need to stay in the hospital until they are fully recovered. Once again, INSURANCE COMPANIES and their goons - the SENATORS who support this inhumane treatment of our American citizens - who are treating people in unconscionable ways. THESE UNCONSIONABLE AND INHUMANE PRACTICES IN HOSPITALS MUST END NOW !

The BCPPA Act would benefit the patients, letting them recover after necessary surgery.

If something goes wrong afterwards, the patient should be at the hospital so it can be fixed quickly.
