Stem cells are "blank" cells that have the potential to develop into any type of cell in the body -- nerve cells, heart cells, kidney cells.
This gives scientists hope that stem cells could one day treat
diseases such as Alzheimer's, diabetes, cancer, Parkinson's, and
heart disease.
Last May the House
of Representatives passed legislation to expand stem cell research. Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist
- Doctor Frist - refuses to hold a vote in the
Senate, caving instead to the religious right.
This is a rare
opportunity for Congress to significantly improve
the quality of peoples lives.
It's time for
Senator Frist to stop playing politics with our health, and hold
a vote on stem cell research. Please demand a vote today!
As you know, more than 100 million Americans suffer from cancer, heart disease, Alzheimers, spinal cord injuries, Parkinsons, diabetes, ALS, and many other conditions which could potentially be treated or cured through embryonic stem cell research.
A year has passed since the United States House of Representatives passed legislation to increase public funding for this vital research, but the Senate has yet to hold a vote.
Dozens of Nobel Laureates and hundreds of patient advocacy and medical organizations have joined with leaders from both sides of the political aisle - including conservatives like Nancy Reagan - to urge this research. This research is too important to be held up.
You vowed to bring this bill to a vote, and I urge you you keep this promise. Please allow for an up or down vote on stem cell research.
Sincerely,
