Support the UN's Work in Pakistan's Swat Valley

Pakistan is grappling with one of the world's biggest humanitarian emergencies, with more than 2 million people uprooted by the government offensive to expel Taliban militants in the country's northwest Swat valley.
Fortunately, the United Nations (UN) is providing vital humanitarian assistance as Pakistanis flee the conflict areas – assistance that is directly in America's national security interests.
Currently, a number of different agencies from the UN are working to address the humanitarian crisis in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, providing emergency food rations, airlifting critical humanitarian supplies, vaccinating children at transit points and providing ongoing support for orphans, supporting disease control and prevention and providing clean water.
Given the strategic importance of Pakistan's stability to U.S. national security interests, it is important that we support the UN's valuable work and humanitarian aid during this crisis. As Congress prepares to discuss humanitarian assistance to Pakistan, please urge your members of Congress to support aid for a safe and stable Pakistan.

Dear Decision Maker: Pakistan is grappling with one of the world's biggest humanitarian emergencies, with more than 2 million people uprooted by the military offensive to expel Taliban militants in Pakistan's northwest Swat valley. Fortunately, the United Nations (UN) is providing vital humanitarian assistance as Pakistanis flee the conflict areas -- assistance that is directly in America's national security interests. I urge you to support humanitarian aid for Pakistan in the upcoming discussions on the Hill, given the strategic importance of stability in Pakistan to U.S. national security interests. Currently, a number of different agencies from the UN are working to address the humanitarian crisis in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province: - The UN World Food Program (WFP) has been providing emergency food rations to those displaced. The WFP has also deployed experts from its "FITTEST" telecommunications team to provide emergency telecommunications services in affected areas to ensure that no humanitarian aid worker is left unconnected. - The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) airlifted 120 tons of supplies in one day, including: - 10,000 mosquito nets, - 14,000 plastic sheets for emergency shelters, - 1,500 plastic rolls to build walls and privacy screens in camps, and - two portable warehouses. - The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Pakistan has vaccinated more than 10,000 children under five years of age at transit points, as well as provided ongoing support for orphans and unaccompanied children who are fleeing, including a primary school in one new camp. - The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), a fund established to enable fast and reliable humanitarian assistance, has allocated more than $8 million for the prevention and control of communicable diseases, the strengthening of health systems, and the provision of clean water and hygienic conditions. This ongoing crisis demonstrates the invaluable role the UN system plays in providing a range of different services to those uprooted by conflict. In addition, providing fleeing civilians with emergency help is often the first step towards their long term protection and rehabilitation, which in turn, improves the likelihood for long-term stability in conflict areas.
