Global climate change is perhaps the greatest economic, environmental, and political challenge the world faces today. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently won the Nobel Peace Prize for delivering the consensus of the world's scientists: the earth's climate is changing rapidly as a direct result of human activities.
Last year a California-sized piece of the Antarctic melted. Australia is in the midst of a 6 year droughtcalled their worst in 1000 years. Indiawith over a billion people to feedmay lose 50 percent of its crop production in our lifetime because of this climate chaos. The time for action is now.
All countries must dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions if we are to avoid catastrophic consequences of climate change on nations and peoples around the world. And the United States, the world's leading polluter, has to lead the way.
Negotiators from around the world recently met in Bali, Indonesia, to create framework for moving forward in the fight against global warming.
Now it's your turn. What should the next President do, On Day One, to establish U.S. leadership in combating climate change?

Announce your strong support in Congress for the Vehicle and Fuel Choices for American Security Act, which would cut our nation's oil dependence by 2.5 million barrels a day within 10 years -- more than we currently import daily from the Persian Gulf.
- Order your Department of Transportation to improve the fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks -- the cleanest, fastest, and cheapest way to reduce oil consumption.
- Order your Department of Energy to issue loan guarantees to refineries that produce clean and renewable cellulosic ethanol - made from plant material -- which has the potential to virtually eliminate the use of gasoline.
- Order all federal agencies to purchase only hybrid and/or flexible fuel vehicles with the best fuel economy and run all their vehicles capable of it only on E-85 (a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline).
- Order your Department of Interior to stop its headlong rush to open Greater Yellowstone, the Western Arctic Reserve and other irreplaceable wild places to drilling that will only prolong our oil addiction and senselessly destroy our natural heritage.
- Order your Environmental Protection Agency to use the Clean Air Act to set carbon dioxide standards for power plants -- the nation's largest source of global warming pollution.
And while you're at it:
-Encourage lenders to restructure loans so people can avoid foreclosure.
-End lending practices that prevent people from refinancing or steer families into high cost loans when they qualify for better ones.
-Require lenders to base their lending on a borrower's ability to repay the loan.
-Make sure whatever federal rules are adopted allow states and local communities to develop additional solutions.
-End the war now by using the power given to you under the Constitution: Stop the funding, close all U.S. military bases in Iraq, and bring the troops home.

Insist on and enforce true recycling, use of CFL's, and non-toxic cleaners, especially in public buildings. Enact mileage limits for all vehicles with a sooner that later enforcement date. Stop corporate pollution and corporate subsidies through tax cuts. Stop NCLB--it is harming children!!!!!!
