Email this PetitionThe City of Fitchburg, MA is entertaining the thought of allowing a man named Michael Donnelly go into the park on Saturday mornings and shoot the geese with a shot gun as a means of population control.
The city does not seem to be even considering non-lethal measures for controlling the population of the geese instead going with the first option presented to them. It also makes one wonder, what kind of person actively volunteers to end so many lives so harshly.

Save the Cogghall Park Geese
The City of Fitchburg, MA is entertaining the thought of allowing a man named Michael Donnelly go into the park on Saturday mornings and shoot the geese with a shot gun as a means of population control.
The city does not seem to be even considering non-lethal measures for controlling the population of the geese instead going with the first option presented to them. It also makes one wonder, what kind of person actively volunteers to end so many lives so harshly.
Geese are intelligent very social animals, that form strong family bonds. Can you imagine how cruel it will be for them to witness their family members such as their lifelong mate, parents or their offspring, etc. shot in cold blood?
"We have yet to see any legitimate reasons to kill urban geese," says Gregg Feigelson, chairman of the Coalition to Prevent the Destruction of Canada Geese (CPDCG). "Population control is a false lead in terms of trying to get a handle on the conflict. Excluding geese from the area using a number of nonlethal methods is much more effective," he says.
Public notice should have been given, and time granted for the public to weigh in on this issue before any decision would be made.
The mayor says he was “shocked” by the proposal, but is meeting with city officials to discuss the idea.
