Satirical or Offensive? Let the New Yorker Know

  • recipient: The New Yorker Magazine, Editor David Remnick
The July 21st illustrated cover of The New Yorker magazine depicts Barack Obama in a turban fist-bumping Michelle Obama, who sports an afro and a machine gun, while an American flag burns in the fireplace. The New Yorker editorial staff defends the cover as satire, while both the Obama and McCain campaigns have condemned the cover as "tasteless and offensive."

What do you think? Is the cover a smart, satirical look at the right-wing media's racist depictions of the Obamas, or is this cover an over-the-top, offensive image that will simply play into the fears of many Americans?
