End the Global Gag Rule Forever

The Global Gag Rule, when it is in effect, disqualifies some of the most effective and experienced family planning programs in the world from receiving US assistance.

President Obama lifted this policy in his first week in office, but because it’s an Executive Order, it can be unilaterally imposed or rescinded by whoever happens to be in the Oval Office.

The Global Democracy Promotion Act (S 311/HR 4879) would end this cruel uncertainty by barring a future administration from re-imposing the Global Gag Rule. Passage of this legislation is critical to ensure the stability of family planning programs.

The Global Gag Rule is a matter of life and death for women around the world. Millions of these women experience unintended pregnancies, and tens of thousands of them die from complication from pregnancies every year, including by unsafe abortions.

Dear [Decision Maker],

For the past 25 years, the rights and welfare of women in the developing world have been dependent on who is sitting in the White House. Over the coming weeks, we have a real opportunity to change this situation, and I believe it is crucial that you lend your support.

The Global Gag Rule, when it is in effect, disqualifies some of the most effective and experienced family planning providers in the world from receiving U.S. assistance. President Obama lifted the policy in his first week in office, but the threat that a future president could reinstate it just as quickly is continues to undermine family planning efforts in the developing world.

The Global Democracy Promotion Act (HR 4879) would end this uncertainty by barring a future administration from unilaterally imposing the Global Gag Rule. Passage of this legislation is critical to ensure the stability of family planning programs.

I strongly encourage you to add your name as a cosponsor of this important bill.

The Global Gag Rule is a matter of life and death for women around the world. Lack of access to family planning information and services puts the lives and health of women at risk for no defensible reason. Millions of these women experience unintended pregnancies, and tens of thousands of them die from complications from pregnancies every year.

I care deeply about ensuring that women have access to the tools and information they need to protect their health and exercise their rights. I urge you to cosponsor and support efforts to move the Global Democracy Promotion Act. Doing so will help ensure that women worldwide have access to the full range of family planning information and services the need.
