Prevent Animal Abuse in Your Community

Neglect, abandonment, lack of veterinary care, animal hoarding, intentional abuse — sadly, these examples of animal cruelty are all too common. Last year, the BC SPCA conducted 7,839 new cruelty investigations. It's a staggering statistic and many of us feel overwhelmed when we think of the thousands of animals who experience distress.

The good news is that we can all take action to provide a safety net for our province's vulnerable animals and prevent animal abuse before it begins. If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference after hearing about a case of animal cruelty in the news, one of the best things you can do is to speak up for animals.

Make sure your local elected officials know how important it is to you for B.C. to have a strong animal protection law enforcement system and safety net.
Dear [Decision Maker],

On behalf of all animal lovers, I want to tell you how important it is to me for British Columbia to have the strongest animal protection system in Canada. That means tough laws, meaningful penalties and adequate resources for law enforcement and prevention programs.

The humane treatment of animals, whether they're family pets or farm animals, is something that everyone in British Columbia cares very deeply about. Sadly, examples of animal cruelty are all too common.

Last year, the BC SPCA conducted 7,839 new cruelty investigations. It's a staggering statistic and many of us feel overwhelmed when we think of the thousands of animals who experience distress due to illness, injury, neglect, abandonment or outright abuse. It is appalling to hear about senseless and tragic cases of animal cruelty. It is also frightening since all too often, animals are not the only victims of abuse. There is a strong connection between animal cruelty and other forms of violence like bullying and domestic abuse.

To protect our communities, we need to protect our animals. I am calling on you, as my MLA, to show that acts of cruelty against animals will not be tolerated in this province. Continue to strengthen B.C.'s animal protection laws and regulations and support programs that prevent violence, suffering and neglect and provide a safety net for our province's most vulnerable animals. Please use your power to speak for animals and create safer, more humane communities across B.C.
