TELL CONGRESS: Repair the Voting Rights Act

Three years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court gutted key provisions of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). Since then, states and localities have used every tool available to make voting harder.

Without Congressional action to repair the VRA, 2016 will mark the first presidential election in 50 years without its full protections. Throughout the 2016 primaries we saw voters face a variety of obstacles from reduced polling places to long lines to removal of registered voters from the rolls.

These challengers are just a canary in the coalmine for what's to come in November without the Voting Rights Act's protections.

It is an unfortunate fact that discrimination in voting against racial, ethnic and language minorities continues in America. This should be unacceptable in the greatest democracy in the world.

The Voting Rights Advancement Act was introduced to address the voting discrimination unleashed in the wake of the Shelby County v. Holder decision. Yet the legislation is being held up on both sides of Congress.

It's time for Congress to take action to protect voters. Add your voice to that of our League of Women Voters citizen lobbyists and urge Congress to modernize and repair the VRA.
Dear Representative/Senator:

I urge you to support legislation to repair and modernize the Voting Rights Act (VRA). The Voting Rights Advancement Act (S. 1659; H.R. 2867), introduced by Senator Leahy and Representative Sewell will ensure the full protections of the VRA are reinstated in this important election year.

Three years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a key part of the VRA, reducing the protections for the voting rights of American citizens. The VRA protected the right to vote regardless of race, ethnicity or language for nearly 50 years. It's time for Congress to fulfill its obligations under the Constitution to eradicate voting discrimination by repairing the VRA to its full strength and effectiveness.

Since the Shelby decision politicians in states, counties, cities and towns have passed laws and adopted practices that discriminate against voters of color and language minority voters – making it harder to register and harder to vote. This should be unacceptable to the greatest democracy in the world.

2016 marks the first presidential election in 50 years without the full protections of the VRA and the 2016 primaries are just a canary in the coalmine for what's to come without these protections in November.

The time to act is now. Congress can no longer sweep the concerns of voters across the country under the rug. Please support and pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act!

Sincerely,
