Google is both stifling and endangering its users by requiring them to use their real names on Google+. In an age when information about a person is so readily available, online pseudonyms can be an excellent way to prevent online sexual harassment, bullying, stalking and job discrimination.
Rape victims can anonymously connect in online forums and share their experiences without fear of shame or retribution from the perpetrator. Bloggers can enjoy freedom of speech and expression without worrying about losing their jobs or being targeted for harassment.
Google's original intention in instituting this rule was to deter harassment. However, harassment can occur no matter what name people use; pseudonyms can actually protect people from it.
Google's intentions are honorable, but their execution is misguided. Ask Google to listen to and protect their users by allowing for pseudonyms.
While it is clear that Google was trying to protect its users by demanding that they use their real names, it actually puts them at risk.
Many people choose to use pseudonyms not to harass others, but to protect themselves from harassment. In an age when information about a person is so readily available online pseudonyms can be an excellent way to prevent online sexual harassment, bullying, stalking and job discrimination.
It also helps people who would otherwise by silenced by intolerance a voice to fight for what they believe in. Sometimes anonymity is the only way to stay safe.
Please ask Google to listen to its users as you further change and develop your social networking website Google+. Allow for pseudonyms.
