Global Warming Threatens Health of World's Oceans

Target: Olympia Snowe, Chairwoman, Senate Committee on Oceans, Fisheries, and Coast G
Sponsored by: Care2, Care2
Did you know that the oceans absorbed 48 percent of the carbon dioxide emitted into the air by humans over the last two centuries? At that rate, impacts from global warming could damage the ability for many ocean creatures to survive. Please help by signing this important petition!

Since 1800 the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased by nearly 36 percent. However, this reflects only half of the CO2 that has been emitted during this same time, leaving room for some doubt as to the urgency of global warming. Recent studies show that the "missing" CO2 has been absorbed into the oceans. And now, studies are demonstrating that the increased amount of CO2 in the oceans is threating ocean life.

Between 1800 and 1994 the oceans absorbed 118 billion metric tons of carbon -- equalling the weight of 118 billion small cars! What happens now? According to the study, the increased carbon can affect the acidity of the oceans, slow the development of coral reefs and shelled sealife -- creatures that represent the base of the foodchain in the ocean. Such a disruption to the foodchain can severely affect the balance of ocean life with potentially catastrophic results.

Take action today to stop this assault on the oceans. Sign the petition below and urge Olympia Snowe, Chairwoman of the Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Fisheries, and Coast Guard to fund renewable energy sources and efforts to slow global warming to protect our health and our oceans.

Christopher Sabine of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration led the study, which was published in Science magazine last week.

I am concerned about the rate of global warming. I want the Senate to champion renewable energy that will slow global warming and protect the vitality of our oceans. A recent study showed that the oceans absorb 48 percent of the carbon
dioxide emitted into the air by humans, a rate that could damage the ability for many ocean creatures to survive.

I encourage the Senate to make a commitment to slow global warming and protect our oceans by funding renewable energy sources.

Please show America that the Senate means business on clean energy and protecting our oceans.

Sincerely,
We signed the “Global Warming Threatens Health of World's Oceans” petition!

It could destroy all life on this planet if bush does nothing to stop it and if he does nothing everyone will know bush doesn,t care about the people.I think sir richard branson who donated 3 billion to global warming over ten years should be our president instead of bush at least he is trying to help save this planet and people what has bush done so far nothing. Thanks again sir richard branson for trying to help save our planet. our oceans and waters need to be saved. Also all life on this planet deserves a second chance don,t you agree?

We need the oceans to survive. Over-fishing and pollution have devastated the oceans. They are becoming more acidic because the oceans absorb carbon emissions and more acidic seas kill marine life. We URGENTLY need to reduce carbon and greenhouse emissions and to create marine sanctuaries and ocean preserves so that ocean ecosystems can rejuvenate.

Everything is connected to our great demands and habits. We will poison ourselves by not seeing the warning signs that are always plainly visible to us now and have been for two decades.

Because it harms not only the oceans, but the Polar Ice Caps that are melting, and raising the ocean water levels.
