End Genocide in Darfur Through Multilateralism

Target: President Obama
Sponsored by: Mike Capuano for U.S. Senate
President Obama is currently planning a trip to China -- and high on his priority list needs to be addressing the situation in Sudan. President Obama recently released a new policy for addressing the genocide in the Darfur region, in which he renewed sanctions on Sudan while simultaneously offering incentives for cooperation on issues like terrorism.

Such a carrot-and-stick approach can work -- but only if President Obama backs it up with a multilateral strategy. He should start with China, a country that holds deep influence over the Khartoum government and should be his first ally in achieving peace in Sudan.

Urge President Obama to use his upcoming visit to China to address the problems in Darfur.

Dear President Obama,

Thank you for speaking out on your position with regard to the genocide in Darfur. I support your carrot and stick approach to dealing with Khartoum, but I expect you to follow it up with multilateral engagement. Your upcoming visit to China is the perfect time to begin such dialogues.

I hope that you will urge China to use their political and economic influence to push for peace in Sudan. China has the power to work with Khartoum to implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and bring about the systematic reforms the country so desperately needs.

Only with such a multilateral engagement will we achieve lasting peace in Sudan -- and I urge you to take the first step by engaging with China on this issue in your upcoming visit.

Sincerely,

I know that a new tragedy has strucken the world, Haiti, but i feel that its grief is not as big as the Genocide in Darfur. The Genocide has been lasting 6 years, while the Haiti Earthquake was only 1 day. Therefore, the Darufurians have been suffering way longer, and they continue to suffer! We need to help the people of Darfur because everyone has human rights and the Sudanese government and the Janjaweed are denying them of it.

Children and people die everyday from something that the U.S. could stop in HOURS! America should take a break from our own problems to fix the humanity problems in coutries like Sudan.

I watched this movie called the Devil Came On Horseback one day in class. I heard about Darfur so many times before because my teacher is so obsessed with it, but I never thought that it was so bad over there. This movie opened my eyes and made me see what these poor innocent people have to live through. This movie had my whole entire class crying. I've never heard such brutal things done to people. The movie talked about how the Janjaweed run babies over with their car, and how they hack people up on tires. I know a lot of American citizens probably don't care because Sudan is a third world country, but I don't think that it should matter. They are people and they deserve the right to live just as everybody else does. I don't understand why you can't take out the troops in Iraq and all of those places to help a real cause, that might only take a day to correct. You would be sparing so many innocent women, children, men, fathers, brother, uncles, mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, cousins, and grandfathers. You would never want to see this happen to the American people, so how can you stand by and watch this happen to our fellow brothers and sisters in the Darfur region dying so horrilbly at the hands of this corrupt government?
