It’s unacceptable: Ever since the U.S. Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United ruling opened the floodgates to let corporations spend unlimited amounts of money to influence elections, our nation has been drowning in a tidal wave of corrupt political cash.
The corporations that pollute our air and water — and threaten our climate — are many of the same ones responsible for polluting our democracy by spending hundreds of millions of dollars to elect candidates who will do their bidding in Congress. Meanwhile, we all pay the price.
Big Oil and their allies have been spending big on politics for decades, electing climate change deniers who will protect their ability to spew out unlimited amounts of carbon pollution for free.
Thankfully, there is something you can do about it. The Government By the People Act (H.R. 20), introduced by Congressman John Sarbanes and cosponsored by more than 150 other members of Congress, would combat the influence of big money in politics, raise civic engagement, and amplify the voice of average Americans.
It’s time for Congress to put the public’s best interests before these special interests of big polluters. The Government By the People Act is a great step in the fight to get big money out of politics, but it only has a chance of moving forward if we show a huge amount of public support now.
