Conceal or Reveal: Support Mandatory FDA labeling of GMOs

  • by: Just Label It
  • recipient: General Mills, Kellogg’s, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola
Many of our favorite, trusted brands – Kellogg's, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and General Mills – have teamed up with other major food companies, spending more than $100 million on anti-labeling campaigns. And their trade association, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, is one of the main supporters of the dangerous DARK Act, which recently passed in the House. This legislation would not only prevent mandatory FDA labeling, but it would also make it nearly impossible for local agencies to protect human health and the environment on any of the 228 million acres that are currently being used to grow GMOs. Unless labeling is mandatory, consumers will not get the information they need and deserve.

These companies often pride themselves on an honest and healthy image; yet they are not being fully transparent to parents, families and consumers across the country – marketing their products on trust, but funding anti-labeling efforts at the same time.

Join us in asking these major food companies to just label it and support mandatory FDA labeling of GMOs.
Subject: Support Mandatory FDA Labeling of GMOs

Dear Kellogg's, Quaker Oats, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and General Mills:

As a concerned consumer who cares about the health and environmental impact of the food I eat and feed my family, I urge you to support mandatory FDA labeling and to stop funding anti-GMO labeling initiatives.

Studies show that the adoption of GMO foods has increased herbicide use in the U.S. by hundreds of millions of pounds, putting consumers and the environment at risk. The World Health Organization recently labeled the most prolific of these herbicides as probably carcinogenic. Families like mine have the right to see GMOs labeled, so we can choose if we want to support this increased chemical usage.

Instead of helping Americans get the labeling information they deserve, your company partnered with others in the food industry and spent a combined $100 million to deny consumers the right to know if GMOs are in the food they buy. Furthermore, the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association, of which you are member, has supported the DARK Act (HR 1599) that would prevent mandatory FDA labeling, restrict local agencies from passing farming laws that protect human health and the environment and continue to keep consumers in the dark. On July 23, this law passed in the House of Representatives, and if it passes the Senate as well, it will certainly be a step in the wrong direction for American consumers.

I want to trust your company’s products for my family, but I need all the facts to make an informed decision. Labeling information on American food products has grown to include transparency around ingredients, nutrition levels and portion size. Mandatory GMO labeling is the next logical step, and one that is already the norm in more than 60 countries around the world. I ask you to stop keeping American consumers in the dark – please support mandatory FDA labeling and stop funding anti-GMO labeling initiatives.
