The Sumatran tiger is an endangered species and Rama lived at this zoo in the city of Surabaya on the main island of Java.  A spokesperson, Ms. Lanu appears to defend this “death zoo” by saying that proper procedures were followed to help the tiger and other animals. She said "The death was due to natural causes, we provided the best care we could."

Rama was born and raised at this zoo, living only 16 years.  He had signs of poor health for weeks before passing on. Activists have had concerns about this zoo for years due to its history of keeping animals in overcrowded cages and enclosures, which are often filthy and in a state of disrepair. Now another unnecessary life has been lost. The animal welfare groups have been continually call for the closure of this “death zoo.”

The effort in this petition is to encourage Indonesia government officials to intervene and ensure the closure of this zoo.  You can help with this crucial issue by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own comments and ideas in the name of Rama and the other wildlife that suffered unnecessarily.  No animals should live in such filthy, deplorable conditions without the help they need and deserve.

President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo – There are some major concerns regarding the zoo in the city of Surabaya on the main island of Java.  This facility has been dubbed as the “death zoo,” a reputation that results from the numerous deaths of their animals.  Such deaths included several orangutans, giraffes and tigers that includes Rama who just recently died from heart failure (due to neglect). The zoo has been known for its history of keeping animals in overcrowded cages and enclosures, which are often filthy and in a state of disrepair. Please ensure that you close down this zoo, make the abusers of cruelty and neglect held accountable and place any remaining animals in healthy reputable sanctuaries where they will get the help and care they need.
