End Admittance of Violent Sex Offenders to the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, and/or changing the Shelter’s Acceptance Policy

  • by: Jacky J
  • recipient: Boulder City Council

The North Boulder Shelter for the Homeless (the “Shelter”) is currently housing Sexually Violent Predators (SVPs) when they are released from prison and are known to be highly likely to re-offend.

The character of North Boulder has changed dramatically since the Shelter was zoned and adopted its current acceptance polices. Today, women, children, and families make up a large portion of the population. We want to change the zoning for the shelter, and/or the acceptance policies for the Shelter, so that they no longer admit such persons to their facility.

Our concern is the safety and well-being of the growing population of North Boulder. Women, children, and families should be able to fully enjoy their community and patronize local businesses without fear of attack by such violent predators.

In addition to asking the Boulder City Council to rezone North Boulder so that SVPs may not settle here, we want the Executive Director and Board Members of the Shelter to change their policies of accepting persons with past criminal records related to child molestation, rape and other acts of sexual violence.

Update #56 years ago
We have asked the following candidates for Boulder City Council if they would support a land-use ordinance to restrict SVPs from playgrounds and schools.
The following four candidates stated they are willing to pass a land-use ordinance restricting SVPs from schools and playgrounds: Jill Grano, Bill Rigler, Mirabai Nagle and Sam Weaver.
The following are unwilling to pass an ordinance: Jan Burton, Ed Byrne, Cindy Carlisle, John Gerstle, Mark McIntyre,Adam Swetlik and Mary Young (a BIG NO).

City Council voted yes to draft legislation limiting where SVPs can go in our city. This is a great step forward. The City Attorney will draft several versions of ordinances to be voted on in August.City Council may decide not to implement an ordinance at all.At the June 20th City Council meeting the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless's Management Policy will be reviewed, we are demanding they update the policy to no longer accept SVPs or have parole beds.
Update #36 years ago
THIS IS IT.Tuesday, June 6th City Council will vote 'yes' or 'no' to drafting legislation to limit where sexually violent predators can go within our city. The Boulder Shelter for the Homeless is NOT willing to change their policies, they will continue housing criminals. The shelter is gravely out of touch with what it's neighbors are pleading for. This is our only chance.
Please email City Council and tell them to vote 'YES' on drafting the legislation!

Update #26 years ago
Over the weekend a committee member delivered packets to all board members of the North Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. The packets included the petition, signature comments, notes from City Council members and demands to stop allowing SVPs into their parole beds.. The Board Chair has reached out to me, they meet tonight. There are many issues they need to face, I insisted they start with protecting their homeless from these predators as well as protecting our women and children.
Update #16 years ago
Last night I presented this petition to Boulder City Council. Four people from our committee spoke about ending the admittance of SVP's into the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. We demanded the city take action to no longer allow these predators into our community. Please continue to spread the word about our effort and contact city council demanding change.
