Take the Pure Waste Challenge: Save Energy and Slow Climate Change in 2008!

Target: Hinkle Charitable Foundation
Sponsored by: Solar Electric Light Fund
Saving energy is good for the environment and good for our pocketbooks. But did you also know your energy habits at home can have huge consequences around the world?

One third of the world's people live without electricity and its power to promote health, education, livelihoods, and human dignity. These 1.7 billion people are forced to either use dirty diesel generated power, or live without electricity, lights, irrigation possibilities and connections to the outside world.

Be part of the solution!

SELF project: Myeka High School, South Africa
Please join us in pledging to conserve precious natural resources in your own life so that ALL people can enjoy their benefits! Pledge to do all of the following:

1. Change 25 percent of the bulbs in your house or apartment to compact florescent lightbulbs (CFLs). Click here to read the primer.

2.
Learn about the benefits of tankless water heaters and seriously consider converting to a tankless water heater when your current water heater wears out. Click here to read the primer.

3.
Reduce the amount of time your car idles, including before driving and when not moving for a period of time. Click here to read the primer.

Take the Pure Waste Challenge and help reduce global warming in 2008!

Note: The first 440 people who took the Challenge generatated a $100 donation, at no cost to themselves, to Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) by the Hinkle Charitable Foundation! These funds will be used to bring solar power to rural villages in the developing world.

Thank you for your interest in renewable energy and global development!

This pledge is now closed. But you can still make a difference! Please click here for more actions.

Dear Mr. Hinkle,

Thank you for your generous donation of time and financial resources to fight global warming worldwide. I pledge to do my part to help in the effort to reduce carbon emissions and slow the effects of global warming worldwide.

By taking the Pure Waste Challenge, I agree to the following:

1.) Replacing just five light bulbs with compact florescent lightbulbs (CFLs) will prevent over three tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. I pledge to change 25 percent of the light bulbs in my house or apartment to CFLs.

2.) Hot-water usage in the average US household is between 15 and 30 percent of a home's overall energy demand. I pledge to learn about and seriously consider converting to a tankless water heater when my current water heater wears out.

3.) Americans waste approximately 3.8 million gallons of gasoline by voluntarily idling their cars. I pledge to reduce the amount of time I idle my car, including before I drive and when I am not moving for a period of time.

Sincerely,

My family has made many changes to help provide for future generations and in the process helped train one of the future generation. We recycle all paper, plastic & metal. Our food wastes go to composting.

I have done all of these things except I'm a renter, so I can not install a new tankless hot water heater.

Wonderful! I changed my lightbulbs about 9 months ago...never knew about the tankless hot water heaters. Sounds like a great idea! I rarely let my car idle...can't afford the gas!

Here we feel global warming is an issue which affects us all, directly. Thank you for your initiative. Indeed we have already changed our bulbs and rarely idle vehicles - because of the cost as well as environmental impact! We like almost people here have no water heaters of any kind.

Our earth is a great place and everyday is slowly being destroyed with global warming. I really want to make the earth beautiful and natural again...but of course, I can't do it alone! All of us have to work together.

We drive a hybrid and put solar panels on our home. Most of our lightbulbs are compact florescents. But, we are only one household; thankfully, there are wealthy people who are helping many more of us to make a difference.
