Stop the Ban on American Pit Bull Terriers

This petition is intended to oppose the upcoming proposal by the Oklahoma State House of Representatives to ban American Pit Bull Terriers statewide.

Due to recent sensationalized media coverage of local dog attacks, a State Representative from Moore, OK, is planning on introducing a bill to ban "pitbulls" statewide.  There are nice pitbulls that are loving family pets, but unfortunately, these do not make the news because nice does not obtain high ratings.

The only purpose this law will serve is to drive responsible and law-abiding dog owners out of state.  Breed specific legislation does little or nothing to decrease dog bite incidents.  According to the Humane Society of the United States, dog bites are not the problem of a single or handful of breeds.  Instead, they are often the result of irresponsible and sometimes abusive dog owners.  Statewide bans will only encourage these types of owners to obtain other large breed dogs and train them the same way they trained their pitbulls.  Another problem with this type of legislation is that it is hard to determine exactly what is a pitbull if it is not registered with a kennel club, and many are not.  Any similar looking breed and/or mix breed could be targeted.   That includes your family pet.

If you can imagine the heartache of losing your beloved family pet due to a discriminatory ban such as this, please, sign this petition and forward it to your friends.  It will be given to the Oklahoma State House of Representatives at the beginning of their next legislative session.
