Urge Congress to Permanently Protect the Arctic Refuge!

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds. It is also the most important onshore denning habitat for America's vanishing polar bears.

But this natural treasure is constantly under siege. Time and time again, the oil industry and their allies in Congress have sought to open this special place to harmful new drilling, threatening all of the wildlife that depend on it for survival.

And now President Bush has called for drilling in the Arctic Refuge by 2010 in his new budget proposal!

We need to permanently protect the Arctic Refuge! Urge your Representative to support the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act (H.R. 39) to permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
deadline: 1-16-2009

Dear Representative,

As your constituent, I am deeply concerned about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the treasured wildlife that lives there. That's why I strongly urge you to ensure that this national treasure is permanently protected to the full extent of the law by supporting the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act (H.R. 39).

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Jim Ramstad (R-MN), would designate the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as a wilderness area with permanent protections.

These permanent protections are especially important for America's remaining polar bears. According to a U.S. Geological Survey report, polar bears will likely be extinct in Alaska in as little as 50 years due to rapidly melting sea ice. The Arctic Refuge is one of the most important onshore denning habitats for these magnificent creatures -- and permanent protections will give them a fighting chance at survival.

These areas of wilderness have existed for millions of years... it would be tragic to destroy them in a matter of decades for the sake of human greed. Please do what you can to protect these places, and the wildlife that resides within, for future generations. Thank you.

Please protect this refuge and all of the species that harbour there. Make your voices in your congress ones that encourage less energy useage, increased alternative fuel sources. Protect the refuge as a treasure for all of global citizenry.

The Bush Administration has seen its sunset. In those waning hours it is apparently bent on leaving as enormous a legacy of destruction and environmental degredation as possible. Please remember that you represent all interests of your constituency, not just the Dominionist Christian far-right wing. Many of us do not agree that laying waste as rapidly as possible to the planet will accelerate the "second coming of Christ". It will without doubt, however, accelerate the difficulties of all beings who share Earth as their home. Polar bears are already critically stressed by shrinking habitat due to rising oceans and melting ice. Surely you don't support pushing the extinction of a threatened species in the name of an outdated energy source. Oil is no longer truly sustainable and legislative attention should be focused on developing and funding other forms of energy. The technology has been available for much of the lifetimes of the present senior generation. It is shameful that these technologies have languished without frontline support by you, our elected representation. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge -- for at least the eighth time -- is NOT the answer to our energy crisis. It is only the answer to a few greedy personal oil buddies of Mr Bush, who invested in that project before his first election and are determined to see it through, even in the face of logic, reason and planetary safety. Please stop this horrible monster in its tracks once and for all. I have signed so many petiitions on this topic I am truly, truly sick of hearing about it. I sincerely hope you are too.
