Protect the habitat of the ‘Black Eagles of Roodekrans’ the last known pair of breeding Black Eagles in an urban area
One of Johannesburg’s last mountain wildlife ecosystems is under critical threat from recently authorized developments.
The Roodekrans Ridge System, with the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden at its core, provides sanctuary for a rich array of habitats supporting indigenous fauna and flora, including threatened and endangered species such as rhebuck, Mountain reedbuck, Duiker, Jameson red rock rabbit, Caracal, Black backed jackal, Porcupine, Aardvark and Leopard. International and local visitors flock to this idyllic island of natural beauty to catch a glimpse of the world renowned ‘Black Eagles of Roodekrans’.
Despite negative environmental impact assessments, Mogale City received authorization for the construction of a water reservoir on top of a pristine ridge currently managed as part of the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens close to the black eagle nesting site on undisturbed Protea-grassland ridge vegetation.
