New York State Child Sex Abuse Statute

Presently, victims of child sex abuse have until their 23rd birthday to prosecute their abuser. Unfortunately, many victims have not even begun to realize the effects of the abuse by that time. So often by the time a victim is strong enough to recognize the damage, realize their rights and take action, it is too late. It is time to write laws that empower victims and stop protecting abusers. Let’s put the punishment where it belongs—on the abusers.
We, as residents of New York State, wish to promote passage of State Senate Bill S.1021 and State Assembly Bill A.7068 to amend the State Criminal Procedure Law by providing that the statute of limitation for the prosecution of a sex offense or incest committed against a child under the age of 18 shall be 15 years after such a child reaches the age of 18 years. As your constituents, we will be looking for favorable support on this important issue.
