Protect the Giant Sequoias From Logging

Target: Abigail Kimbell, US Forest Service Chief
Sponsored by: Care2
The ongoing battle to protect one of the most triumphant symbols of America's proud wilderness - California's Giant Sequoias - has reached a critical time.

Giant Sequoia National Monument is home to more than half the giant sequoias in existence and also provides essential habitat for the California spotted owl, Pacific fisher and other plants and animals.

But despite being rebuked by the federal courts, the Bush Administration is refusing to back off its plan to log this irreplaceable ancient forest. And more than half of the remaining groves - located in Giant Sequoia National Monument - are in jeopardy.

Masquerading as a necessary measure to protect the forests and surrounding homes from wildfires, the plan would open our precious ancient Sequoia groves to chainsaws and bulldozers. In fact, it would very likely increase the chances of fires because logging large fire resistant trees leaves behind only smaller, more combustible trees and highly-flammable dead limbs, branches, brush and needles.

By contrast, neighboring Sequoia National Park's innovative conservation and fire prevention strategies have reinvigorated the Giant Sequoia groves there and made nearby communities safer while helping avoid harmful logging.

Please sign our petition to US Forest Service Chief Abigail Kimbell urging her to extend permanent protections to these imperiled trees and to transfer management of Giant Sequoia National Monument to the National Park Service, where it clearly belongs.

Dear US Forest Service Chief Kimbell,

As the US Forest Service Chief, I urge you to challenge the Bush Administration's continued efforts to allow commercial logging within the boundaries of the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Logging in this way is a violation of the Presidential Proclamation that established the Monument.

The Administration's 'management plans' fail to provide the kind of protection that the vast majority of Americans support.

Giant Sequoias are among the oldest living trees on the planet. Many took root long before our great, great grandparents were born and will live to see our great, great grandchildren - if we don't allow the timber industry to destroy them first.

It is time to recognize the significance of this national treasure, stop the efforts to log in our last remaining ancient Sequoia groves and transfer management of Giant Sequoia National Monument to the National Park Service.

[your comments]

I urge you to focus on protecting this incredible National Monument and this symbol of America's proud wilderness.

Sincerely,
[your name]

Please save trees. If possible plant more but dont destroy the ones. They are precious. It is easy to destruct anything...but takes lot of effort, willingness and courage to build one

Trees are beautiful and they are necessary to our existence as humans; therefore, cutting them down seems counterproductive.

These giants are not only the largest living thing on earth, and almost the oldest living thing on earth, each tree also supports a whole network of livings things - like a village of symbiont life forms, some lifeforms are visible and many more invisible to the naked eye. Sawing down one giant is slaughtering a whole village. How can our forest service, who in my lifetime have been relied on to be the protectors of our natural world, now be so irreverent of nature's interest? It may not be a criminal offense in a court of law yet, but one day soon it will be. Only 5% of our forests remain on earth with more disappearing every day. Read WWW.tenbillionacresforhumanity.org and find out more reasons why these trees are absolutely vital for life to sustain itself on our planet. These sacred Sequoias should also be given 5 year vacations from insensitive humanity and give them these periods to recover from human invasion. In my life time I can visibly see they are looking very stressed and need a long period of silence and peace. Humans can learn how to be protectors and do the right thing for nature's interest if they are guided by those in charge. The Forest Service is in charge. Be the parent. Look out for their future. Love and revere these sacred Sequoias for God's sake.

I can't believe we even need a petition for this. The Giant Sequoias are one of the wonders of the world. They have lived thru environmental changes we can't even imagine. They've survived flood, fire, earthquakes and other natural disasters to give us a glimpse of the true majesty of nature. Are we going to allow irresponsible, callous loggers to destroy this symbol of the northwest?? These trees are a National Monument. Would the Lincoln Memorial or the Washington Monument be allowed to be torn down for commercial greed?? Absolutely NOT. But those things could be rebuilt, the Sequoias can NEVER be replaced. Stop this travesty now!!.

The Giant Sequoias are irreplaceable. My parents first took me to see them when I was a child (I am now 60) and I remember my sense of wonder as I looked up. Please protect these magnificent trees so children in future generations can continue to experience such wonder at what nature has to offer. The market economy can do wonderful things. But, its guiding principle is profit generation. Without appropriate restrictions, corporations are more likely to plunder than preserve.

Please protect these irreplaceable trees. They have taken hundreds of years to develop to the majesty they now exhibit. Their wood is not worth the price of loosing these American treasures.
