Urge the UK Government to Continue the Fight against Undernutrition

In June 2013 at the pre-G8 Nutrition for Growth event global leaders, developing countries, NGOs and the private sector committed £2.7 billion to tackle undernutrition amongst the most vulnerable people between now and 2020. But, a new Lancet series study shows we need to invest £45 billion by 2020 to save the lives of 1 million children under five and reduce stunted growth in 33.5 million more. In short, we need to start spending the pledged money now - or helping 33.5 million children won't be possible.

Concern Worldwide is committed to spending £38.3 million, half of our pledged funds, by 2016 on projects to tackle undernutrition. We are calling on the UK government to spend £375 million of its £655 million pledged funds by 2016 too.

Send a message to Prime Minister David Cameron and urge him to pledge his support now.

For every signature we receive on this petition, we will add 10 cowpeas to our cooking pot. When it is full, we will present it to Mr Cameron along with the petition signatures to show how much the people of the UK want him to honour his pledge early. So please don't wait -- sign the petition today!
Dear Mr Cameron,

Have you heard of the cowpea? It's the pea that transforms lives. Growing well in arid lands, where hunger hits hardest, the cowpea is an extremely nutritious food full of protein as well as iron and zinc and the leaves can be eaten like spinach. Families can easily store them too, providing long term food security. Without the threat of undernutrition, families can find work, get an education for their children and even build businesses...

Why am I telling you this? Because, small though it is, the cowpea shows that hunger CAN be beaten. And because YOU, Mr Cameron, have the opportunity to lead the way tackling hunger and transforming lives globally. In June 2013 at the pre-G8 Nutrition for Growth event global leaders, developing countries, NGOs and the private sector listened to YOU. Together, they pledged £2.7 billion to tackle undernutrition between now and 2020. A fantastic result, but new research has shown that we need to invest £45 billion by 2020 to save the lives of 1 million children under five and reduce stunted growth in 33.5 million more. In short, we need to start spending the pledged money now.

Concern has committed to spending £38.3 million, half of their pledged funds, by 2016 on under nutrition and I am calling on the UK government to spend £375 million of its £655 million pledged funds by 2016 too. Please distribute the £375 million Britain pledged in time to make a new pledge and pass the baton on at the next Nutrition for Growth event in 2016. I know you can do it.
