Protect Moapa Indian Reservation: Shut Down the Reid Gardner Coal Plant!

  • by: Sierra Club
  • recipient: Members of the Nevada Public Utilities Commission
Surita Hernandez's family lives 500 yards from the Reid Gardner Coal Plant and her entire family is suffering from respiratory illnesses due to pollution. Despite lobbying the Nevada Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to close the plant to protect her family's health, NV Energy is requesting to keep Reid Gardner operating full force until 2023.

Instead of investing in old, outdated technology at Reid Gardner the PUC should invest in clean energy that doesn't make people sick -- like wind, solar, and geothermal electricity and energy efficiency technology. Investments like these will save lives and money and create good jobs.

Join Surita, her family and tribe and tell the PUC to to deny Reid Gardner's request to continue operating until 2023.

The deadline has been extended! Please act now.
Subject: Deny NV Energy's request to operate Reid Gardner until 2023

Dear Members of the Public Utilities Commission,

I live in Nevada and I know you are currently considering NV Energy's proposal to keep the dirty Reid Gardner coal plant running until at least 2023. Exposure to coal pollution has been found to be extremely harmful to our health from several well respected organizations including the American Lung Association, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and the Harvard Medical School. It is awful that the members of the Moapa Band of Paiutes Tribe are living the closest to the Reid Gardner power plant and getting the worst of the toxic pollution.

Coal is very expensive. Instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars from our electric bills on the expensive repairs this plant needs to keep operating, we should be investing in clean energy like wind, solar, and geothermal electricity and energy efficiency technology. These investments will create jobs in Nevada and save us money in the future because we won't rely as much on volatile fossil-fuel prices.

Every day that Reid Gardner operates it creates more air pollution over Southern Nevada, and a more expensive environmental clean-up. Please deny NV Energy's request to extend Reid Gardner's operation until 2023, and order them to begin the clean-up and transition of this plant immediately.
