Reform The Farm Bill To Improve America's Health

Eating healthy is one of the most important elements to living a long, healthy life. But it is hardly easy or cheap. For many who live on the edge of, or below the poverty line it is often cheaper to purchase junk food full of empty calories than it is to buy an apple or head of broccoli. Have you ever asked yourself why healthy food is usually the most expensive?

Part of the reason is because the US Government via the Farm Bill encourages farmers to grow crops that are low in nutrition, have inefficient yield or are used to feed livestock. Many of the crops, like corn and wheat - some of the most heavily subsidized produce in the country - go straight to making processed foods. The majority of these foods lack real nutritional value.

The cheaper these crops are to produce, the cheaper their products are to purchase. So for the 43 million Americans living in poverty,  the cheapest way to eat is likely not the best. In fact, nine of the 10 poorest states in the country are also the fattest. Many in these states live in food deserts, areas with little to no access to affordable, nutritious foods.

The Farm Bill program needs to be reevaluated to promote an agriculture system that encourages the farming of the most nutritious crops that lowers their costs and makes them more accessible to all Americans.

It is up for renewal in 2018 so there is no better time to tell Congress that we need to change the way America grows its food. Sign the petition and tell your representative that Americans want a smarter, healthier food system that works for us.

US Congress,

The agricultural system currently in place in the US is making many Americans sick. It promotes the production and consumption of unhealthy, non-nutritious foods while making good, healthy fruits and vegetables so expensive they are often out of reach for America's poor. This is not how it should be. Please take action to change the way our country feeds itself. Next year, when the Farm Bill is up for renewal, demand a change for the better.
