Tell OfficeMax to stop destroying Southern forests

Target: Sam Duncan, CEO, Office Max
Sponsored by: Dogwood Alliance
The Southern forest region of the U.S. contains some of the most biologically rich ecosystems in North America. It is home to hundreds of forest and aquatic species -- especially amphibians, reptiles, snails and trees -- that are found nowhere else on earth.

Unfortunately, the Southern U.S. is also the largest paper-producing region in the world, supplying nearly 60% of the paper in the United States.

Our Southern forests are being rapidly wiped out to meet surging demand for office copy paper and paper packaging. Unless consumers insist that such throwaway products be produced from recycled fiber instead of trees, the great forest that once cloaked the southeastern U.S. is in danger of being into turned into vast, biologically sterile pine plantations.

OfficeMax, the third largest retail office supply store in the US, endangers forests of the South by doing business with the most irresponsible logging company in the region.

OfficeMaxÂ’s two largest competitors, Staples and Office Depot, have already committed publicly to increase recycled content in the paper they sell and avoid sourcing paper from endangered forests.

Urge Office Max to follow suit. Demand that OfficeMax stop sourcing paper from endangered forests! Tell Office Max CEO Sam Duncan to make a commitment to the environment and Southern Forests.

Dear Mr. Duncan,

Where is your commitment to the environment? It’s been two years since your competitors, Staples and Office Depot, developed paper procurement policies to avoid sourcing paper from endangered forests and increase recycled content in the paper they sell.

Yet OfficeMax continues to threaten and destroy some of the world’s most unique and vital ecosystems by doing business with irresponsible logging companies and purchasing paper from endangered forests. What’s more, paper on the shelves of OfficeMax is contributing to the destruction of endangered forests in the Southern US’s Cumberland Plateau and the Canadian Boreal – two of the most biologically diverse regions on Earth.

I call on your company to:

•Stop sourcing paper from endangered forests, including endangered forests of the Southern US and the Canadian Boreal.

•Match the standard 30% industry average post-consumer recycled content for all paper grades that OfficeMax sells.

•Phase out all sales of 100% virgin paper.

•Stop purchasing paper from suppliers that convert natural forests to industrial pine plantations.

•Develop and implement environmental paper policies, and reduce overall paper use in internal company operations.

I will not shop at Office Max, and will not buy any item for the company I work for, until you stop destroying ecosystems.

Sir:since your competitors have made public committments to use recycled paper products not sourced from endangered Southern forests, why don't you join them? For that matter, why not use the potential PR angle to your advantage & publicly proclaim that your company will not use/stock/sell any paper products that are not made from 100% recycled materials & none sourced from endangered Sourthern forests or other endangered or fragile ecosystems??!! Talk about business sense, you would scoop the industry. Environmentally responsible business practices are essential to the well-being of the planet & to ensuring that you will have devoted repeat customers. I will not patronize your business unless & until you adopt the 100% recycled paper product business plan & stop destroying fragile & endangered forests. A grassroots boycott of your company would be costly to you & your shareholders. Why not do the responsible thing & endear yourself, & your stores, to the hearts & minds of environmentally responsible & conscientious consumers? In the long run, the responsible approach will win you much more business than you have now. Why not go for it & make your shareholders proud & happy?

I will tell everyone I know to boycott your store until I hear that you care at all about the world's natural resources. It is truly shameful.

I have always chosen OfficeMax over Office Depot, but if you continue this destructive policy, I will be glad to switch my purchasing to your competitor. Please let me know when you have rectified this bad practice. Thank you.

Please stop destroying our Southern Forests. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. Isn't there some way that saving the environment and preserving your company can work together? I know all of us who want to save the envirnoment voice our opinion, but we do not have a solution to the problem. Although, we are all human beings and should be caretakers of the earth for our preservation and especially for future generations. As we destroy the environment and unbalance the ecology, we head down the path of self destruction. Please help prevent this.

For over a decade there has been technology that will transform garbage into beautiful, clean, stong building material. Why not do the same with paper and save this planet?

I'm sure everyone on this list will tell at least 10 others to shop elsewhere until you turn this around. There are many other sources for your materials as there are many other sources for our office supplies.

Stop destroying our forest's. Pay attention to the last sentence in Revelation 11:18 (New Living Translation)The nations were angry with you {God}, but now the time of your {Gods} wrath has come. It is time to judge the dead and reward your {Gods} servants. You {God} will reward your prophets and your holy people, all who fear your {or Gods} name, from the least to the greatest. And you will destroy all who have caused destruction on the earth." You see it says, "And you will destroy all who have caused destruction on the earth." {You} meaning {God} will destroy all who have caused destruction on the earth. That means our Forest's being cut down, and anything else the God has created. God created these things for our enjoyment and for the wild animals to live in. If you keep cutting down the trees the the animals have nowhere to go. Then that causes them to come into inhabited places to search for food. Because all the trees have been cut down all the food for dangerous animals, ie: bears, mountain lions, cougars, wolves, etc; has disappeared, so they come into inhabited places in search of food. Well, here's a thought question for you? What if this bear or wild cat or wild dog, came into your yard and mistook your child or your grand-child for food. And all because their home has been cut down. Peoples children and grand children are being killed every day because the wild animals come into inhabited places for food. If these wild animals have no-where to go, they will come in your yard in search for food and that food could be someones child or grand child. So please stop cutting down the Forest's. Let the animals have their home.
