Stop Iceland's Whale Hunting

Target: Jon Bjarnason, Minister of Fisheries, Iceland
Sponsored by: Care2.com

Iceland's whaling season began recently, kicking off a bloody whale hunt that could lead to the death of 100 minke whales.

Iceland is one of only two countries worldwide that still authorizes commercial whaling. About half of the whale meat from this year's hunt is intended for domestic sales in Iceland, while the rest of the quota will be sold to Japan.

Sign the petition and tell the Icelandic government to reduce this year's whale hunt quotas immediately – and to ban whaling forever.

Dear Minister Jón Bjarnason,

I am deeply disappointed to hear that Iceland began its whaling season this year with a quota of 100 minke whales that can be killed from May to late September.

I strongly urge you to reconsider this plan by reducing this year's whale hunt quotas immediately and working toward a full ban on whaling in Iceland.

[Your personal comments will be added here.]

As a wildlife lover and environmentalist, I am concerned about the future of whales, especially as global warming causes rapid changes in their ocean habitats with unknown impacts on these beautiful and majestic creatures.

I am also concerned that your government is clearly sensitive to the impact of its whale hunting industry on tourism, since whaling is banned close to the harbor and the first whales are usually killed in a bay just outside of Reykjavik. Clearly a more effective effort to protect Iceland's tourism industry and popular whale watching businesses would be to ban the brutal whaling program completely.

And as a traveler and consumer, I would strongly consider visiting Iceland to whale-watch, but only if your country bans whaling.

Thank you for considering my comments. I look forward to your swift action to ensure a complete ban on whaling in Iceland.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

'With the Medicine Buddha mantra you can liberate numberless sentient beings from oceans of suffering and bring them to enlightenment.' - Lama Zopa. Tayata Om Bekanze Bekanze Maha BeKanze Radza Samudgate Soha In the Bhaiṣajyaguruvaidūryaprabharāja Sūtra, the Medicine Buddha is described as having entered into a state of samadhi called "Eliminating All the Suffering and Afflictions of Sentient Beings." From this samadhi state he spoke the Medicine Buddha Dharani.[1] namo bhagavate bhaiṣajyaguru vaiḍūryaprabharājāya tathāgatāya arhate samyaksambuddhāya tadyathā: oṃ bhaiṣajye bhaiṣajye mahābhaiṣajya-samudgate svāhā. The last line of the dharani is used as the Medicine Buddha's mantra. Medicine Buddha Sutra, as a bodhisattva who made 12 great vows. On achieving Buddhahood, he became the Buddha of the eastern realm of Vaidūryanirbhāsa, or "Pure Lapis Lazuli". The Twelve Vows of the Medicine Buddha upon attaining Enlightenment, according to the Medicine Buddha Sutra[1] are: To illuminate countless realms with his radiance, enabling anyone to become a Buddha just like him. To awaken the minds of sentient beings through his light of lapis lazuli. To provide the sentient beings with whatever material needs they require. To correct heretical views and inspire beings toward the path of the Bodhisattva. To help beings follow the Moral Precepts, even if they failed before. To heal beings born with deformities, illness or other physical sufferings. To help relieve the destitute and the sick. To help women who wish to be reborn as men achieve their desired rebirth. To help heal mental afflictions and delusions. To help the oppressed be free from suffering. To relieve those who suffer from terrible hunger and thirst. To help clothe those who are destitute and suffering from cold and mosquitoes.

I'm against killing ALL animals. You reap what you sow. The world will never know peace unless we seek peace for ALL including animals. that means not killing them for food, for clothes, for any reason.

This is barbaric and totally unnecessary. Whales are a treasure and fellow earthlings that need to be treated with respect. We reap what we sow -- decimate and destruct, and we will suffer the same.

As an animal activist, and advocate for preventing extinction of species, I question the true motive behind, and ultimate benefit of whale hunting in our age of technology and innovation. The act of whale killing is environmentally degrading, unsustainable in practice, cruel and obsolete, in terms of a way of earning an income. What is the point??

Excuse me Jon Bjarnason! But did you realize what you're doing is wrong? Whales are precious, and I don't get why you are doing this with Japan. I know that the Japaneses kills THOUSANDS of dolphins every year. Is this for money? Do you need money badly or something? You're making everyone hate your city and your country. One day, Iceland is going to become extinct because no one visited it. No one wants to. so HAHA if that happens! Blame yourself! No one wants to watch whales being killed! We're not heartless like your country! Oh my god, you animal abusers are ruining your countries reputation! How smart of you guys!
