Before the Violence Gets Worse: Cut Off Weapons to South Sudan

  • by: Oxfam America

Since violence broke out in South Sudan last December, hundreds of thousands of families have been forced to flee their homes. More than four million people in South Sudan are now in urgent need of assistance — among them young children, who are at severe risk of malnutrition, disease, and death.

This crisis is man-made and as long as the fighting continues, the humanitarian situation will only get worse. We have to cut off the flow of deadly weapons to the warring parties — before the fighting intensifies in the dry season.

It's time for the US government to step up and demand South Sudan's leaders make peace now. A UN Security Council-imposed arms embargo is key.

Tell President Obama, Secretary Kerry, and National Security Advisor Rice: Push for a comprehensive arms embargo on South Sudan.
Dear President Obama, Secretary Kerry, and Ambassador Rice:

Since conflict broke out in South Sudan last December, hundreds of thousands of families have been forced to flee their homes.

This crisis is man-made and as long as the fighting continues, the humanitarian situation will only get worse.

I'm writing to you today to ask you to do more to stop the fighting in South Sudan, starting with a comprehensive arms embargo at the United Nations Security Council.

We have to cut off the flow of deadly weapons to the warring parties — before the fighting intensifies in the dry season.
