Tell the Senate to Ban Landmines!

Landmines maim or kill approximately 15,000 civilians every year, including 4,000 to 5,000 children. They are still in the ground in at least 70 countries.
In 1999, the Mine Ban Treaty was created to ban all antipersonal mines and clear all mines from the ground. It also urges assistance for victims of landmines, 30-40% of which are children under the age of 15.
Today, 156 countries are party to the Mine Ban Treaty. Though the U.S. has not used land mines in 17 years, our participation in the agreement would improve our standing in the world community, and it would put pressure on countries who are holding out on the ban, such as Russia and Myanmar.
It is time the U.S. signed on and provided one more step toward making the treaty universal. Tell your senators to ratify the Mine Ban Treaty this year.

Mine Ban Treaty was created to ban all antipersonal mines, requiring the destruction of stockpiled mines and clearance of mines already in the ground. It also urges assistance for victims of landmines, 30-40% of which are children under the age of 15.
Though the U.S. hasn't used land mines for military purposes in 17 years, it is critical that we participate in making this treaty universal. At least 70 countries still have mines in the ground.
Please join 156 other countries in ratifying the
Mine Ban Treaty. This move can both improve our standing in the global community and set an example for countries that are resisting ratification.
