Kentucky Fried Chicken's paper packaging is directly contributing to the destruction of America's Southern forests. While other fast food chains are working to ensure that their paper packaging is not coming from the world's endangered forests, KFC continues to make its famous buckets from the few remaining special places in the Southern U.S.
KFC buys from International Paper, a company notorious for "business as usual" destructive forest management practices like large-scale clearcutting, conversion of natural forests to plantations and reliance on toxic chemicals in forest management.
Despite repeated attempts to engage KFC in discussions, the President has refused to match his espoused values with the company's iconic packaging.
Sign the petition and let the President of KFC know that Southern forests are too precious to be wasted for packaging!
America's Southern forests are too precious to be wasted to make fast food packaging. I am writing to ask your company to put your money where your mouth is and address this important issue by taking easy steps to match your espoused corporate values.

Your company is one of the most well-known in the world and for generations has stood for strong values and raised the status of the Southern U.S. globally. Most iconic is the famous KFC bucket which is known the world over. Unfortunately, KFC's packaging, including the bucket come from endangered Southern forests, and until your company addresses that issue, people across the region and around the globe will continue to demand you do better.
There are a few easy steps that can help ensure your packaging does less harm to the forests and communities of the Southern U.S.:
* Maximize efficiency and use less overall packaging for your products
* Increase the use of post-consumer recycled paper in your packaging
* Where recycled paper is not available, make sure your paper originates from well-managed forests as certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
While you have chosen to ignore these important issues, forests and communities across the region continue to be severely impacted. Endangered forests are being logged and practices like large-scale clearcutting, conversion of natural forests to plantations and intensive use of toxic chemicals in forest management lead to the destruction of wildlife habitat, degradation of water quality, the loss of important carbon sinks, and impacts on our quality of life.
It does not have to be this way! While other fast food chains are working to reduce their environmental impact, your company has chosen to ignore its impact and instead hide behind empty rhetoric and false certification schemes like the SFI.
Please join with the Dogwood Alliance to address these issues and become a true leader in the fast food industry and a company that everyone in the Southern US can be proud of. I look forward to hearing from you on this important issue.
