Tell Maryland Lawmakers to Legalize Marijuana

  • by: Care2.com

Prohibition failed with alcohol, and it’s not working with marijuana either. Support for legalizing marijuana is increasing around the nation, with Vermont, Illinois, and New Hampshire passing critical marijuana reforms just last year.

Maryland may be the next state to embrace progressive marijuana legislation. Senator Jamie Raskin and Delegates Curt Anderson, Heather Mizeur, and Sheila Hixson are sponsoring a bill that would legalize recreational marijuana use for adults over 21, regulating it in a similar way to alcohol and taxing it with a portion of the revenue going toward education and drug treatment programs.

Most Maryland residents support the proposed law, which would help fund important social programs, reduce crime, and decrease the number of innocent people in jail. But despite widespread support, important figures such as House Speaker Michael Busch continue to oppose this legislation. That’s why we need to speak up and do all we can to show our support of this bill.

Act now. Send a message to Maryland’s House of Delegates in support of legalizing marijuana today.
Dear [decision-maker],

I urge you to support the Marijuana Control Act of 2014. Legalizing and taxing marijuana in Maryland will benefit our state. Among other things, the Marijuana Control Act will lead to:

- a healthier budget from increased tax revenue

- reduced rates of drug-related violence and crime

- fewer nonviolent prisoners in jail

- a step toward dealing with marijuana dependence and other drug-related illnesses in a sustainable, non-punitive way

[Your comments here]

It is time to move past the coercive and ineffective prohibition of marijuana in Maryland. Please vote in favor of the Marijuana Control Act of 2014.

Sincerely,
