Sadly people treat them like trash. Greyhound racing as well as Pit bull fighting should be STOPPED! And the people who shoot the poor animals after they retire or cannot race should be shot also. | 847 | 6:43 pm PST, Dec 7 | Mr. | Jason Martinez | |
| 846 | 11:15 pm PST, Dec 2 | Ms. | Hunter DeLa Cruz | Greyhounds are mistreated and cruelly treated. They are first shoved into a small crate, and the doors are slammed shut which they are left in total darkness. When suddenly the door opens which light floods into the crate and all they know is to run. Because death is closing in behind them. They are known for their physical attributes and speed, their shape and their need for love. These runners are the greyhounds, but many people don’t know the truth about them or what happens behind the doors when the race is over. There are number of ways things can happen and you wouldn’t even know what happens. Even though they look normal, things can be different in their eyes and body. They have been around for 4,000 years. From Egypt to Rome and now even in the United States. In the late 1800s, the Greyhound was brought to America to aid Midwestern farmers in controlling jackrabbits from eating the crops. They were created to run which was their basic instincts. Owen Patrick Smith was the first man to produce the Greyhound Industry in 1906. The first racing track was built in Hot Springs, South Dakota. He brought the sport into the world and it became a big industry that will soon be the world’s greatest gambling sport. As the tracks grew so did the people,it showed the future that it will soon make Greyhound Racing a big sport. There were tracks built in Alabama, Massachusetts, Arkansas, New Hampshire, Arizona, Oregon, Colorado, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Texas, Florida, West Virginia, Iowa, Wisconsin, and even Kansas with a total of 46 tracks. After many battles and strikes they have brought the amount down to16 tracks and still we will continue to fight for the Greyhounds lives. The life of a baby Greyhound could be cut short because of the high demand for great racers. Thousands of Greyhounds are breed annually and “weeded out” the losers. When a winner is found it will stay by the owner’s side, some owners will beat the dogs to make them a “better runner.” The puppies don’t get special treatment because, they are soon to be racers and they need to understand what they need to do and what they were made for. They are kept muzzled and stacked in metal cages or wooden crates for 20 or more hours a day. Their blanket for the cold weather is a ripped up newspaper. When they’re six months of age, they are brought to a training farm or a camp to learn to race after they get lured with a decoy for animals to capture or run after. To encourage their behaviors with running they will usually use live rabbits, cats, or other small animals so they will get the taste for blood and get them to run after the fake lure on the track. About 100,000 small animals are killed every year because of this sport and the numbers will keep increasing. After training on the farms and camps they are sent to race on the tracks. They are still kept in small cages and fed the same thing. The food they are fed is called 4-D meat. “4-D meat comes from animals that were slaughtered when the animals were dead, dying, diseased, or disabled. The cows, horses, or whatever is sick and are being treated, the ones that die they are slaughtered. They carry those drugs in their system. The problem with this meat is the meat can be contaminated and can make the dogs ill. They buy 4-D meat because they can get it cheap” (Baker, Bred to Run or Born to Die 12). The meat could hold Salmonella, E. coli, Shigella, Listeria, lockjaw and even Tuberculosis. When an animal dies or is dying it will be sent to the plant where it will be unfrozen before it is feed to the dogs. They are caged in 3-1/2 feet wide by 4 feet deep by 3 feet high crates that are stacked two level high with males on the bottom and the females on the top. These dogs will spend most of their life there at the track and no where else. The Greyhound Owners treat the dogs as a short-term investment. This at times only means that they will only help them to run on the track, they do not want a long-term racing dog, so there is little medical aid. This will lead to tooth problems which can be caused by what they eat or from them biting at the cage bars. Some will carry tick-borne diseases and parasites due to the low treatment and environment they are kept in. When A Greyhound lives where they are no longer able to make a profit (Generally at ages three to five) the owners will keep them to breed or dispose of them in a inhuman way. There is an estimated that 20,000 to 25,000 Greyhounds killed each year. Which has us to believe that more then one million Greyhounds lived have been claimed in the past 75 years (Research Lab, Electrocution, Starvation, Gun shots, Head trauma, Heat stroke, and many more). When they need the dogs to be transported to other tracks they are usually moved in trailers, But the trailers don’t have air vents nor anything that is safe.. The temperature can reach up to 100 degrees but still no air will enter the trailers. Six Greyhound died after being Transported from Oregon to Florida in 95 Degree heat in a aluminum dog trailer, the 3,000 mile journey. Because of poor air and lack of a proper trailer. They have lived in pain and will continuing it until we, the people can help they become loved, all they wish is to live with someone that cares and understand that they could be great animals. So look into their eyes and see the pain and the longing to be in a home on a bed and by the heat of a fireplace. To be able to call somewhere a home and someone family. So open your arms and let one know they can be loved for who they are and not for profit. If we don’t do something the death reports will continue to rise. There have been cases of owners selling there nonprofitted dogs to research labs where they will live in pain until they are no longer a subject to their tormenting. More then 40 Greyhounds were illegally donated for medical research to the Mississippi State University without the knowledge of their owners. One case revealed photos and videos that expose bloodied and mutilated remains of Greyhounds and the unsanitary pens until they were killed. Colorado State University has been yearly testing on hundreds of live subjects from their local tracks and local breeders. One case reported a owner sold six hundred Arizona racing dogs to several research facilities between 1988 and 1989. Twenty Greyhounds were tested on a eight-week bone braking experiment, sixty three were sold to UC Davis, and four hundred were sold to Gore Laboratories, and the rest of the Greyhounds were sold to nine different facilities throughout California and Arizona. The total amount saved was only forty two. Even though Labs are a big problem still we find remains of dogs. On April 23 forty five Greyhound bodies which included thirty puppies were found in a sub-station in O’Fallon, Missouri. Police said that the dogs were dumped in three different sites in a period of five months. The carcasses were in different stages of decompositions. The ears of nine adults were rudely cut off in order to hide the tattoo mark to be traced back to the owner. Also they had found to body of three rabbits and one cat in the pile. At a Jefferson County Kennel Club investigator found the bodies of seven Greyhounds. One body was found on top of a pile of dirt, the skull of the second one was inside a plastic bag. Five corpses were found soon after a fresh pile of dirt in a ditch. A hundred and forty one Greyhounds were poisoned with a harmful pesticide used to kill fleas and ticks that was mixed into their food. Another report was about thirty five Greyhounds were found at a Yuma Training Farm were in muzzles and locked in their kennels were found dead from thirst and starvation. There is a bigger and worst thing going on even in Europe. After hunting season is over they will take their dogs to the forest where they will be hanging from their necks where their back legs barely touching the ground, there people will bet on how long the dog will survive. The higher from the ground means that the dog was a poor racer and that he will sufferer more then great ones. Even though we fight for Greyhounds we continue to find bodies. One man faces sentencing after he had been guilty of slaughtering at least 10,000 Greyhounds after a undercover investigation. For the past fifteen year David Smith had been killing health dogs, in which their owners deemed not fast enough to race He had been burying the bodies in a one area land in his backyard in Seaham. On a Sunday times recorded two days were he received the greyhounds from the trainers before killing them with a bolt gun, Dumping them in ” Their grave” before he covered the bodies. The owners would pay ten dollars to kill their nonprofit able dog, which were only a few years old. Soon investigators found at least ten thousand Greyhound bodies in his field. Ever since 1997 anyone could kill animals with a bolt gun even though they don’t even have a licence. But they could be prosecuted for inhumane ways of killing. After he was confronted he served his time and now he as stopped killing Greyhounds. A former Florida track Security guard was changed with animal cruelty when police found remains of 3,000 Greyhounds were found on his property. Robert Rhodes said he had killing injured and aging dogs with a gunshot to the head from the owner he had known, in return they had paid him ten dollars each dog. Soon a district attorney had found information stating that only four dogs had been shot clearly through the brain, but other had wounds through the neck and elsewhere, showing that in real life they had suffered before dying. In the end he had only received 10 years in prison. Colchester, England: An anonymous tip received May 4 in Colchester, England led workmen to the body of a greyhound that had been dumped in a garden container. The dog had been tied up and shot in the head. Its ears were also cut off. In Glasgow, Scotland police received a call from an eyewitness who had seen a greyhound hurled from a car on Highway M47 on the outskirts of Glasgow. The dog has not been found and is presumed dead. Seven years ago, 19 greyhounds were found drowned in a nearby quarry. Their ears had been cut off and bricks had been tied to their necks to weight them down. Still, even though their or more reports on adult Greyhound deaths, puppies still have to fight even when they are training. Their have been many cases where a puppy had been hit or fell causing their legs to be hit by the lure causing injury and even death. "Mr. Junior Mint," an 18-month-old puppy, was entered into his first-ever schooling race on July 30 at the Flagler dog track. He fell and was bumped into the rail during a collision with "Our Baby Ruth," another 18-month-old pup. Two of his legs were severed when he was hit by the lure motor causing him to died from massive blood loss. "Our Baby Ruth," who was also injured, disappeared from the record on August 27th after performing poorly in the school races. So please help and save the lives of Greyhounds young and old. Help find them homes and families that will love them and understand that they are friends. Help the puppies that are training right now be free from the pain. Free from the torment their owners put on them |

| 832 | 7:13 pm PDT, Jun 19 | Mrs. | Linda Thorburn | It is a cruel trade, greyhounds where they either murdered, abandoned and put to sleep. There is also a nasty, seedy net work of auctions were these animals are sold on. These often are shipped abroad to other management. For those of them that don't perform well enough in Spain, they are hung alive. It is also known that in UK and Ireland they are often shot in the head with nail guns and dumped on rubbish tips with their ears cut off so that the ID tattoo cannot be followed back to the owner. Remember Rusty?, a few years back who had this done to her!! She had a nail in her head, and ears cut of, unfortunately she was still alive when the RSPCA found her. When she looked up at the officer, she even wagged her tail, even though she was suffering and whimpering with agony So, you will understand why partitions still exist and a continual demand to stop greyhound racing altogether but your heart is cold, because it still goes does it not!! |
