Target:Maine Legislature and Governor Sponsored by:Care2.com
Earlier this year, Gov. John Baldacci signed a same-sex marriage bill making Maine the fifth state to legalize same-sex marriage.
This is a victory for equal rights, and comes almost five years after Massachusetts became the first state in the nation to allow same-sex marriages. The other states are Connecticut, Iowa and Vermont.
Unfortunately, it looks like opponents are already moving to overturn the law. All they need to do is collect 55,000 signatures within 90 days of the the Legislature's adjourning to get a referendum question on the ballot. If they succeed, the law would be suspended until a vote can be held.
There's another hard fight coming, but in the meantime, let's celebrate this victory and thank those who made equal rights possible in Maine!
