Rogers County Humane Shelter

The city of Claremore has an animal shelter that is falling apart. The animals are kept on cold concrete in small runs. There is only space for a few dozen dogs. The drainage is poor and the climate control is ancient. There is no active adoption program in effect outside of walk in adoptions and a weekly mention in the newspaper. Most animals are euthanized.
The Rogers County Humane Society operates alone with no City or County support. They strive to be a 'no kill' rescue, euthanizing only the most sick, aged or dibilitated animals. Every Saturday, without fail, they bathe, load and transport their dogs to the Pets Mart in Tulsa to show for adoption. They are extremely effective at placing animals in stable homes, only adopting out to families with good references and fenced yards. Desexing and vaccinations are mandatory for all animals being placed. This group is overwealmed with the numbers that they care for. The president, Debbie Stellas and her husband live with more than a dozen strays in their home. The number has been as high as 28. They can no longer keep the animals outside due to complaining neibors. They work constantly to keep the animals clean and healthy on top of full time jobs and operating the organization. There are currently about 100 dogs in care with the Humane Society.
Our community has taken advantage of these services for long enough. These people and these animals need our help. We need a city/county funded animal shelter operated by a group that truly cares for the animals. We need a city funded spay and neuter program offering discounts to individuals who cannot afford the surgeries and money to care for the strays. This petition is imperative to our community and the future health and wellfare of all animals. The unvaccinated and overwealming stray population effects all of us, including the wildlife and our livestock. We have people willing to do the work to solve this incredible problem, now lets please step up and give them what they need to do so.
