Demand Duke Energy provide clean drinking water to families whose water it's poisoned!

Sherry Gobble's family, of Dukeville, NC, bears the burden of purchasing bottled water for everyday use. Their well, situated just 400 feet away from Duke Energy's Buck Steam Station coal ash pond, contains hexavalent chromium, according to independent water tests conducted earlier this year.

The Gobbles say their family has long suffered medical issues their doctors can't explain. Their 9-year-old son was born with a cyst at the base of his brain, and both children suffer from chronic nose bleeds.

Now, not only does the Gobble family have to deal with the uncertainty of their health, but after the troubling water test results, they are now paying for bottled water to use for drinking as well as for brushing their teeth, cooking, and bathing. This is unacceptable.

Duke Energy owns 14 coal ash sites throughout North Carolina. Coal ash can contain a range of toxic heavy metals, including boron, lithium, arsenic, mercury, and lead. When found in drinking water, these contaminants can increase the risk of cancer, create heart and lung problems, cause stomach ailments and contribute to premature death.

Demand Duke Energy be a good neighbor and provide clean drinking water to all the communities near coal ash ponds until the coal ash is moved to dry, lined storage.
Dear Governor Pat McCrory; CEO Duke Energy, Lynn Good; and Communications Manager, Duke Energy, Erin Culbert

Clean and safe drinking water is a right that all North Carolinians should share, but many families living near coal ash ponds worry that their water could be making them sick. I urge Duke Energy to pay for municipal or bottled water for all homes that rely on well water within a one mile radius of any unlined Duke Energy coal ash pit in North Carolina. The current steps taken by Duke Energy and state lawmakers do not go far enough to protect people living near coal ash.

Now is the time for Duke Energy to be a good neighbor and provide clean drinking water to all the communities near coal ash ponds until the coal ash is moved to dry, lined storage.

Thank you,
