We Have a Right to Know: GM Ingredients Must Be Labeled

  • by: NDP
  • recipient: Government of Canada
Do you know what's in the food you eat?

Genetically modified ingredients must be labeled — because we all have a right to know.

Almost 90% of Canadians support labeling genetically modified foods – and giving consumers the choice.

But for years, Conservative and Liberal governments haven't listened. They’ve failed to act.

Labeling genetically modified foods will allow consumers to make their own choices about the food they eat.

It’s time for Canada to catch up with what 64 other countries already do, and label genetically modified foods. Because we all have a right to know.
Dear [Decision maker],

We the undersigned residents of Canada note the following:

- Canadian consumers have a right to know exactly what they are buying.
- Mandatory labeling of genetically modified ingredients will give Canadians the information they need to make informed choices about the food they eat.
- 64 countries have already implemented mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods.
- A balanced approach to the use of genetically modified organisms considers the health and sustainability of our environment and communities, the protection of biodiversity, and the economic interests of farmers.

Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada to introduce mandatory labeling of products containing ingredients that have been genetically modified and undertake a balanced approach to the use of genetically modified organisms.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
