The Global Gag Rule has blocked critical contraceptive supplies to numerous African countries and caused a host of clinics to close across the continent. Refusing to provide aid to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has undermined that agency's efforts to provide services to vulnerable women worldwide, from Afghanistan to Yemen, from Bolivia to Zimbabwe.
These actions are denying women around the world the power to make their own choices about childbearing. They are threatening the lives and health of millions of women and children.
More than that, the global gag rule and the refusal to support UNFPA are undermining more than three decades of successful work to slow population growth, to protect the environment, to expand economic opportunity, to improve maternal and child health and to raise the quality of life for people everywhere.
Tell Congress and the President to repeal the global gag rule and restore support to UNFPA.
I urge you to support restoring U.S. aid to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and repealing the global gag-rule.
UNFPA is the largest internationally funded source of population assistance to developing countries, providing support to 142 developing nations in 2000 alone. UNFPA assists developing countries in providing responsible and voluntary family planning and reproductive health services including programs to improve child and maternal health, combat sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS, and provide universal access to primary education.
By giving people more control over their own futures, UNFPA has improved the lives of millions of families around the world. Sadly, the Bush administration has blocked funding to UNFPA for three years running, denying the agency more than $100 million that could have been used to prevent 2 million unwanted pregnancies, 800,000 induced abortions, 77,000 infant and child deaths, and 4,700 maternal deaths each year.
The global gag rule and the refusal to support UNFPA are undermining more than three decades of successful work to slow population growth, to protect the environment, to expand economic opportunity, to improve maternal and child health and to raise the quality of life for people everywhere.
Again, I urge you to repeal the global gag rule and restore support for UNFPA.
Sincerely,
